Sebastian Stan Teases a Major Transformation for ‘The Batman Part 2’
Sebastian Stan has spent the past year quietly becoming one of the industry’s go-to actors for dramatic physical transformation, a reputation built through roles ranging from Tommy Lee in ‘Pam & Tommy’ to Adam Pearson’s prosthetic-heavy look in ‘A Different Man’ to his Golden Globe-winning turn as Donald Trump in ‘The Apprentice.’ That track record has made him something of a specialist in disappearing into a role, both physically and emotionally.
That reputation followed him to Cannes this May, where Stan was promoting ‘Fjord,’ Cristian Mungiu’s Palme d’Or-winning film that required him to shave his head for the role. During that same stretch of interviews, attention kept circling back to a different, still-unconfirmed transformation waiting for him on his next project: Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman Part II.’
Stan has been widely reported to be playing Harvey Dent opposite Robert Pattinson’s Batman, a role with an obvious built-in transformation given the character’s eventual descent into Two-Face. Asked directly about what that transformation might look like, Stan gave an answer that revealed almost nothing while still sounding thoughtful about it.
“There are always transformations, external or internal, when you play a character,” Stan told AlloCiné, sidestepping the question entirely while still acknowledging its premise. The French outlet noted Stan was speaking specifically about whether audiences should expect another dramatic transformation on ‘The Batman Part II,’ a project he was actively filming at the time of the interview, conducted May 18 and 19 at Cannes.
That non-answer fits a broader pattern in how Stan has discussed the role throughout the year. He’s previously described the opportunity as leaving him “excited” and “nervous,” and has spoken about trying to “keep surprising” himself with each new project, language that suggests genuine uncertainty about how far the physical transformation will go rather than calculated secrecy.
Despite the widespread reporting and Stan’s own oblique comments, Warner Bros. and Matt Reeves have not officially confirmed that he’s playing Harvey Dent. Some outlets have reported conflicting accounts of exactly what Stan has said in various interviews, with certain publications walking back earlier claims that he explicitly named the character.
That ambiguity has only fueled further speculation about the shape of his arc. Some reports have suggested the character’s full transformation into Two-Face might not occur until a potential third film, giving Stan and Reeves room to build Dent’s descent gradually rather than rushing the character’s most iconic visual change.
‘The Batman Part II’ is currently set for an October 1, 2027 release, with Pattinson returning as Batman alongside a cast that includes Colin Farrell, Jeffrey Wright, Zoë Kravitz, and reported additions like Scarlett Johansson. Reeves has previously told Variety he feels “incredibly excited” about the script he co-wrote with Mattson Tomlin, describing it as something he’s genuinely proud of after the sequel’s long road to production.
With filming underway and Stan continuing to dodge specifics in interview after interview, fans are left piecing together hints rather than confirmed details about what his version of Gotham’s District Attorney will actually look like on screen. Whether that transformation turns out to be primarily physical, emotional, or some combination of both, Stan’s own comments suggest even he isn’t ready to give it away just yet.
