Sersi vs Scarlet Witch: Who Would Win?

Sersi vs Scarlet Witch: Who Would Win?

In preparation for the upcoming Marvel’s Eternals movie, we at Fiction Horizon have decided to bring you a series of comparisons involving individual members of Marvel’s alien race of the same name. In today’s article, we are going to compare the powers of two very similar female characters – Sersi, a member of the Eternals, and Scarlet Witch, a member of both the X-Men and the Avengers. Find out who would win in a fight between the two in our article!

Despite all of her incredible powers, Scarlet Witch is absolutely no match for Sersi. Sersi’s powers are on a much higher level and whatever Wanda would throw at her, she could easily deflect. Since they are both so similar, Sersi’s powers become even stronger in comparison; this is why Sersi wins this one.

Our comparison is going to be divided into three sections. The first is going to bring an overview of the two characters, after which we are going to compare their powers, including their signature weapons. Finally, we’re going to bring you a detailed analysis of the two characters to determine which one would win in a direct clash.

Sersi and her powers

Sersi is a member of the fourth generation of the Eternals. She is the daughter of Eternals, Helios, and Perse, and was likely born in Olympia, Greece, some time after the Great Cataclysm that destroyed the continents of Atlantis and Lemuria, during a prolonged ice age known as the Age of the Hiborians.

At an early age, Sersi differed from hers Eternal companions hers in her desire to live among humans. It was during her time in ancient Mesopotamia that Sersi met Captain America, who had traveled through time. While Sersi still had the appearance of a girl at this time, she was already thousands of years old. Sersi has a talented intellect and superhuman strength, stamina, durability, agility, and reflexes.

Sersi possesses the ability to manipulate cosmic energy to increase her life force, granting her virtual invulnerability and immortality, the ability to project cosmic energy from her eyes or hands in the form of heat, light, or shocking force, and possibly other powers. Sersi is resistant to cold, disease, electricity, energy, heat, radiation, and toxin attacks. She does not age, and can only be killed if her atoms are scattered. Sersi possesses total mental control over her physical form, granting her virtual invulnerability and immortality.

Scarlet Witch and her powers

Scarlet Witch is the superhero name of Wanda Marya Maximoff, a fictional superhero from the Marvel Universe. She was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, debuting in The X-Men #4 (1964). She was initially depicted as a mutant, but her story was recently retconned and she became a mutated human through genetic experimentation.

Scarlet Witch was initially a supervillain along with her twin brother Quicksilver (Pietro Maximoff) and one of the founding members of the Brotherhood of Mutants, a villainous group led by Magneto. In most of the early depictions, she was portrayed as a mutant, and, for much of the character’s history, was considered the daughter of the mutant Magneto and the half-sister of Polaris. This was later retconned. The Scarlet Witch possesses abilities to alter reality in unspecified ways and is a powerful sorceress.

Later on, though, the mutant version of the Scarlet Witch is depicted as a superheroine and a regular member of the Avengers superhero team. She also becomes the wife of fellow superhero and teammate Vision, with whom she has two sons, Thomas and William.

The character’s in-universe backstory and parentage have been changed more than once throughout the years. During the 1970s, Pietro and Wanda have been depicted as the children of the superhero Whizzer (this is why, at one point, she has been known as Wanda Frank), but a 1980s retcon revealed the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are the unknown offspring of supervillain Magneto. They were born to Magneto’s estranged wife in Transia, and were left in the care of their adoptive Romani parents. Still, during the 2010s, their story was once again retconned, and it was revealed that Quicksilver and she are not mutants but were kidnapped and used as subjects of genetic experimentation by the High Evolutionary, then misled to believe Magneto was their father.

Due to her increasing popularity, Scarlet Witch has appeared in a lot of derivative materials, including TV shows, video games and movies. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe – movies and TV shows included – she is portrayed by actress Elizabeth Olsen.

Comparing the powers of Sersi and Scarlet Witch

Our second section will contain a comparison of the two characters’ powers. It won’t be a direct comparison as much as a listing of their powers abilities, which is going to serve as a basis for our analysis in section three of our article. Now, let us begin.

As a member of the race of superhumans known as the Eternals, Sersi has the standard abilities of the Earth Eternals, though she has focused most of her power on transmutation abilities and has passed it on as illusion or magic throughout the ages.

Sersi’s psionic ability to rearrange the molecular structure of objects is far greater than that of any other Eternal; the limits of Sersi’s molecular rearrangement powers have yet to be revealed. Sersi is the only living fifth-level expert in the transmutation of matter (on a scale of 1 to 5).

She has the ability to alter the molecular and atomic structures of all matter, including living organisms. However, she has expressed difficulties in reorganizing subatomic matter.

Sersi has a talented intellect and superhuman strength (which he can complement by psionically levitating heavy objects), stamina, durability, agility, and reflexes.

Sersi has total mental control over her physical form, granting her virtual invulnerability and immortality.

Sersi has the ability to levitate herself and seven other people, with the ability to keep flying at superhuman speed. She has the ability to make illusions to disguise the appearance of herself and others from the perceptions of normal human beings.
She has the ability to teleport herself and others with her; like other Eternals, Sersi finds her method of teleportation unpleasant and uses this power rarely.

Sersi can communicate telepathically, although she cannot mentally read the minds of any Deviants, and she can control the minds of Eternals, Deviants, and humans. Sersi can telekinetically manipulate objects and generate a force field.

Sersi, like all Eternals, can join with the Uni-Mind. As a trained dancer who has perfected her art for centuries, aided by her superhuman physique, Sersi has extraordinary athletic ability. She has also demonstrated a talent for martial arts, multiple languages, wrestling, and fashion design.

As far as Scarlet Witch is concerned, her powers were initially not precisely defined. Due to her mutations, she was able to use “hex powers”, that could cause random and unlikely events to take place, but the writers never defined her powers precisely. This allowed all future writers a lot of creative freedom, and with time – Scarlet Witch became more and more powerful. Later writers gave her an increased control over her power, so that she could cause specific events and not just random ones. Along with this, she later learned how to use exact magic, similar to the one Doctor Strange uses, but it was later defined as being chaos magic. This was offered as an explanation for her various feats that seemed to go beyond probability alteration, as well as why her hexes almost always have an effect that is favorable to her goals.

Yes, in the “Avengers: Disassembled” storyline, her powers were once again retconned. Chaos magic was removed and replaced with reality warping, which gave Scarlet Witch an incredible amount of power and instantly made her one of the strongest characters in the Marvel canon; with these powers, she was able to change the whole universe. Despite them being taken away once again during a small retcon (where it was explained that her powers were temporarily amplified by an outside force), these powers seem to have been given back to her later, when it was revealed that she was able to exhibit a degree of resistance to the Phoenix Force and can cause pain to its hosts, which is truly incredible.

Before we continue, let us see how the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A-Z (2010) compares the two characters:

Sersi vs Scarlet Witch: Who would win?

And now for the most important and interesting section of our article – the analysis. Here, we are going to use what we have found out about these two characters and analyze how all these facts would (or would not) help them in a fight against each other. Let us continue.

This was a fairly easy comparison, although people might not think so upfront. Why is that? Well, thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), people think that Scarlet Witch is enormously powerful; this is a mistake people made with Captain Marvel as well. Okay, we’re not stating that the two of them are weak, on the contrary, but their powers in the MCU are much greater than they actually are in the comics, i.e., they have been made more powerful than they actually are. Both of them.

We don’t know how the MCU is going to portray Sersi, but what is a comic book fact – and the comics are the only relevant canon – is that whatever Wanda can do, Sersi can do it better.

Sersi is the Eternals’ version of Wanda, in a way, but since the Eternals are so much more powerful than regular humans (mutants included), it is quite natural for Sersi to be so much stronger than Wanda. This is also illustrated in the power grid above, which shows that there is a significant difference in power between the two.

This is why we simply cannot state anything except that Sersi is the clear winner here.
