‘Shang-Chi’ Star, Simu Liu, Shares Frustration Over Slow Progress on Sequel

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was an unexpected success for Marvel. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, it stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, who faces his past when his father Wenwu, leader of the Ten Rings, forces him and his sister Xialing to search for a mythical village. The cast also includes Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, Ben Kingsley, and Tony Leung.

In December 2021, work on a Shang-Chi sequel began, with Cretton returning to write and direct. Simu Liu was also set to return and wanted the sequel to explore how his character uses the Ten Rings’ power and fits into the larger MCU.

In July 2023, Liu said he wasn’t sure when the film would be made. By November, Cretton stepped down as director of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty (now called Avengers: Doomsday) to focus on the Shang-Chi sequel, with filming scheduled to begin in March 2025.

Later that month, Liu confirmed the sequel was in development, responding to fans’ concerns about the lack of updates.

Liu has been open about his frustration with the slow progress of the sequel. He recently showed his disappointment again by liking a social media comment that criticized the studio for not moving forward with the sequel sooner.

Earlier this year, Simu Liu shared that he’s unsure when Shang-Chi will return to the MCU, as those decisions are beyond his control. He added that he wants to stay a fan of the franchise and will be ready whenever he’s called for his next role or appearance.

Oh man, I don’t know to be honest. I mean, those things are so above my pay grade. I just wanna continue to be a fan of it. You know, when I get a call of like, ‘Hey, this is what your in and this is where you’re going to show up. And, this is when you’re going to be need to be blacked out for.

Things aren’t all bad for Shang-Chi in the MCU. He will have an important role in the upcoming animated event Marvel Zombies. Since Destin Daniel Cretton has been announced to direct Spider-Man 4, fans are wondering if Shang-Chi might appear in that movie too.

There are rumors that the Ten Rings could play a similar role in the Multiverse Saga as the Infinity Stones did in the Infinity Saga, so let’s hope!
