Shania Twain Explains Changing Her Iconic Brad Pitt Lyric — and What He Thought About It
Shania Twain has been a country music legend for decades, known for her catchy hits and relatable lyrics. She’s been compared to today’s Taylor Swift because she writes most of her own songs, starting from when she was just 10 years old, according to Saving Country Music.
Over the years, Twain has earned a spot in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, thanks to her talent in both singing and writing. Many of her biggest hits, including “You’re Still the One” and “Man! I Feel Like a Woman,” were co-written with her former husband, Robert “Mutt” Lange.
One of Twain’s most famous songs, “That Don’t Impress Me Much,” originally included a line about Brad Pitt: “OK, so you’re Brad Pitt / That don’t impress me much.” In 2022, however, Twain surprised fans by swapping Pitt’s name for Ryan Reynolds during a performance at the People’s Choice Awards, where she also received the Music Icon Award. Reynolds appeared surprised and flattered by the shout-out.
Brad Pitt had a positive reaction to the lyric change. In an interview with The Movie Dweeb’s Daniel Merrifield, he said, “He didn’t steal. I think we can share the wealth there.” He also praised Reynolds, adding, “Ryan’s a good egg, too. He deserves some love.” Pitt even joked that Twain could pass the lyric on to other stars in the future:
“I think they ought to pass it on down, and next time she ought to sing it to Austin Butler. Maybe Leo [DiCaprio] in between and then Austin Butler.”
Twain explained how Brad Pitt ended up in her song in the first place during an interview with Spotify HQ, as reported by Billboard. She said, “I remember I had a girlfriend visiting me, and it was near Christmas, and we were baking cookies. I was writing this album, and there was a scandal of [Pitt] and Gwyneth [Paltrow] where there were naked photos of him. And this was like all the rage. I just thought, ‘I don’t know what all the fuss is about.’ I’m like, well, that don’t impress me much, I mean what is all the fuss.”
Twain clarified that she wasn’t trying to make fun of Pitt, just commenting on the media attention.
