We have plenty of superhero stuff to look forward to in 2022, but that doesn’t stop the producers to tease us with upcoming projects that we won’t get before 2023. One of them is Shazam! Fury of the Gods, a sequel to the 2019 original movie directed by David F. Sandberg and starring Zachary Levi in the titular role.
Sandberg and Levi are returning for the sequel which is currently in post-production, and it’s set to open in theaters in June 2023. Also, producer Peter Safran now decided to hype up the movie already, teasing us with two important aspects of the movie – action and humor.
“I loved the first Shazam movie. I thought it was beautifully done. I thought that David Sandberg nailed that tone so incredibly well. The eye of the needle was so small to get it right, but he really did nail it. I feel like this second one has more emotion, more humor, but it also has bigger action, bigger set pieces, some great villains. I just feel like it’s everything that we loved in the first movie but really turned up to 11. So I love it. I think the addition of some of these new characters with Rachel Zegler and Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu are fantastic editions. I love that the kids are all a little bit older now so we get to have a little bit more fun in kind of an edgier fashion with them. Zach inhabits that character in such a beautiful fashion. So to have been able to make a second one of those, it’s a thrill.” — Peter Safran for Collider
Asher Angel, Grace Fulton, Jack Dylan Grazer, Adam Brody, Faithe Herman, Meagan Good, Ian Chen, Ross Butler, Jovan Armand, D.J. Cotrona, Marta Milans, and Cooper Andrews are also returning for the sequel, and they’re joined by newcomers Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu, and Rachel Zegler.
Shazam! was released in the spring of 2019. The movie received positive reviews and it grossed $366 million against an $80-100 million budget, which was enough for WB to announce the sequel. In July 2022, we will also watch Dwayne Johnson in the Black Adam movie. Some reports are suggesting that DC is saving Shazam and Black Adam showdown for the third Shazam movie.
