Shemar Moore Hasn’t Been Called for ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 4’, Putting Randall’s Future in Doubt

Paramount’s ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 4‘ is racing toward its March 19, 2027 release, and fans are paying close attention to which familiar faces will return. Shemar Moore, who plays G.U.N. agent Randall Handel, has been one of the franchise’s more memorable live-action additions since joining ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ back in June 2021.

In that sequel, Randall was introduced as the fiancé of Natasha Rothwell’s Rachel before being revealed as an undercover G.U.N. agent sent to capture Sonic and Tails. The couple reconciled by the end, but in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3′ the pair only appeared in a brief cameo, with James Marsden’s Tom and Tika Sumpter’s Maddie using Tails’ technology to disguise themselves as Randall and Rachel.

Now Moore has shared news that has fans worried. According to Screen Rant, the actor indicated that he has yet to be contacted about returning as Randall for ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 4’.

The update spread quickly on X, where The Hollywood Handle framed it as confirmation that Moore will not return, and the post passed 19.8K views and 966 likes. One reply was blunt, declaring the sequel an “instant flop” without him.

Screen Rant’s own reading is more cautious. The outlet pointed out that live-action filming on the sequel already ran from March to May of this year, making the lack of contact notable, but it also acknowledged that the secrecy and NDAs surrounding big franchises could mean Moore simply has to keep any involvement quiet for now.

There’s also a practical reason Moore may not have been available. The Emmy winner wrapped the first season of ‘S.W.A.T. Exiles’, in which he returns as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson, just a month before ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 4’ began production.

That spinoff was announced in May 2025, the same month the original ‘S.W.A.T.’ aired its series finale after 8 seasons. With a demanding lead role on his plate, a scheduling conflict could have kept Moore off the Sonic set.

His on-screen partner’s status is also unclear. Screen Rant noted that Rothwell has not been confirmed for the 2027 sequel either, even though she told the outlet in early 2025 that she would absolutely come back, praising director Jeff Fowler and her fellow cast members.

While the Randall question lingers, plenty of stars are locked in. Digital Spy reported that the film’s first teaser confirmed Jim Carrey’s return as Dr. Ivo Robotnik, alongside Idris Elba as Knuckles and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.

Keanu Reeves, James Marsden, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, and Tika Sumpter are also back, while Kristen Bell joins the cast as Amy Rose. Amy sets up her arrival in the mid-credits scene of ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’, saving Sonic by smashing an army of Metal Sonics.

Fowler and the franchise’s producers are returning too, and the new film will draw elements from the 1993 video game ‘Sonic CD’, with Metal Sonic set to appear. The stakes are high after ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ earned $492.2 million worldwide on a $122 million budget.

Even if Moore sits out the next adventure, Randall’s story may not be over. Screen Rant noted that G.U.N. remains an active part of the Sonic universe, and Randall has yet to properly join the action alongside Sonic and his team.

For now, fans will have to wait and see whether Moore turns up as a surprise or whether Randall’s return is saved for a future installment. With Amy Rose and Metal Sonic in the mix, the franchise certainly isn’t short on new characters.
