Shia Labeouf Says Gay People Are Scary and Links Homophobia to Mardi Gras Arrest
Shia LaBeouf has offered a controversial explanation for his recent arrest in New Orleans, citing a personal fear of certain individuals during the city’s Mardi Gras festivities. In a recent sit-down with YouTuber Andrew Callaghan, the 39-year-old actor detailed the circumstances he claims triggered the incident that led to his detention.
The actor admitted that he felt intimidated when approached by a group of people he identified as gay. He stated that when I’m standing by myself and three gays are next to me touching my leg, I get scared, before adding that if that’s homophobic, then I’m that.
LaBeouf went further in his candid assessment, telling Callaghan that big gay people are scary to me. While his representatives have not provided an official statement, the actor’s comments have already ignited significant backlash online for their prejudiced nature.
According to New Orleans authorities, the former Disney Channel star was taken into custody after allegedly striking two individuals outside a business on Royal Street. Police reports indicate that he reportedly punched one person in the nose before being restrained by bystanders until officers arrived on the scene.
During the interview, LaBeouf seemed to imply that the physical altercation was a reaction to his discomfort with the presence of gay men near him. He remarked that he was fine with people being gay as long as they were over there and not in my lap.
However, he also attempted to downplay the weight of his statements by pointing to his state of mind at the time of the arrest. He noted that he was intoxicated during the celebrations and claimed that everything I’m saying is nonsense.
The actor was eventually charged with two counts of simple battery following a brief hospital stay for undisclosed injuries. This latest legal trouble adds to a growing history of arrests and controversial public behavior that has trailed his career for nearly a decade.
In 2017, LaBeouf was arrested for public intoxication and was recorded making racially charged remarks to the arresting officers. He later issued an apology for that behavior, attributing his actions to a difficult struggle with substance abuse and addiction.
Furthermore, his personal life was under intense scrutiny in 2020 when his former partner, FKA Twigs, filed a lawsuit against him. The singer accused him of physical abuse and emotional distress, a legal battle that was ultimately settled out of court in early 2025.
In terms of his professional life, Shia LaBeouf has recently attempted a comeback with roles in independent cinema and high-profile dramas. He recently starred in Abel Ferrara’s Padre Pio, a role that he claimed led him to a spiritual awakening and a conversion to Catholicism.
LaBeouf continues to reside primarily in Los Angeles, though he often spends time in various cities for his performance art pieces. His career remains a polarizing subject in Hollywood, balanced between his undeniable skill as a performer and his frequent appearances in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
