‘Shōgun’ Season 2 Has Officially Wrapped Filming, and Fans Have a Decade-Long Time Jump To Look Forward To

Few television events in recent memory have generated quite the same critical consensus as ‘Shōgun‘s’ debut season, which swept the Emmys with a record-breaking 18 wins, including Outstanding Drama Series, making it the first mostly non-English-language series to ever claim that top prize. That kind of unprecedented success has made the wait for a second season feel especially long for fans eager to return to feudal Japan.

That wait is finally nearing its end. Season 2 will pick up the story a full decade after the events of the original run, moving beyond the source material of James Clavell’s novel entirely into an original new chapter following Lord Yoshii Toranaga’s continued rise toward power. Production officially began back in late January in Vancouver, the same city that hosted the first season’s acclaimed production.

Now, that production has finally reached its conclusion. Emmy-winning costume designer Carlos Rosario confirmed the wrap on his Instagram over the weekend, marking the end of a shoot that stretched across roughly seven and a half months, spanning sound stages at Burnaby’s Lake City Studios, an elaborate feudal Japan backlot in Port Moody, and additional location shoots scattered across British Columbia, from Minaty Bay to Lynn Canyon Park to Kamloops.

Filming under the working title “Category 10,” the new season is expected to span 10 episodes, continuing the historically inspired saga of two men from vastly different worlds whose fates remain inescapably intertwined. The production even celebrated its completion with a wrap party held in late August at the Port Moody set, complete with live music, drummers, a light show, and fireworks.

Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis are both confirmed to reprise their roles as Lord Toranaga and John Blackthorne, respectively, with both actors also stepping into elevated behind-the-scenes positions this time around: Sanada as an executive producer and Jarvis as co-executive producer. They’re joined by returning cast members Fumi Nikaidô, Shinnosuke Abe, Hiroto Kanai, Yoriko Dôguchi, Tommy Bastow, Yuko Miyamoto, Eita Okuno, and Yuka Kouri, while J-pop star Ren Meguro joins the cast as a new character named Kazutada.

Given the decade-long time jump, not every familiar face is expected to make it back. Anna Sawai’s Lady Mariko and Tadanobu Asano’s Yabushige both died during Season 1’s events, making their return to the new timeline unlikely, though the show has built a reputation for surprising audiences before.

Sanada has previously reflected on what he hopes to see from Toranaga’s arc this time around, noting that since his character never actually became shōgun by the end of the first season, his personal hope is finally watching Toranaga claim that title and become the true leader of Japan’s warrior class. Showrunner Justin Marks has also teased that fans should brace themselves for what’s coming next, hinting at a season that builds meaningfully on the foundation the first run established.

With Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks remaining at the creative helm as executive producers and writers, the series now moves fully into post-production, though no official premiere date has been announced yet. Given the scale of anticipation surrounding this follow-up, FX will likely take its time getting the rollout right rather than rushing the historic drama’s return.
