‘Shōgun’ Season 2 Shares Key Production Update and New Cast Additions
FX’s hit action-adventure series Shōgun is officially gearing up for its second season, with production set to start in January 2026 in Vancouver.
Fans can look forward to seeing Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis return as Lord Yoshii Toranaga and English sailor John Blackthorne.
Alongside them, several actors from the first season will reprise their roles, including Fumi Nikaidô, Shinnosuke Abe, Hiroto Kanai, Yoriko Dôguchi, Tommy Bastow, Yuko Miyamoto, Eita Okuno, and Yuka Kouri.
The upcoming season will also introduce new characters played by Asami Kizukawa, Masataka Kubota, Sho Kaneta, Takaaki Enoki, and Jun Kunimura. According to FX, the series will continue to explore the complex world of feudal Japan, focusing on the lives and adventures of Toranaga and Blackthorne.
Season 2 is set ten years after the events of the finale, offering a fresh chapter in their stories.
Shōgun is based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name. The show tells the story of Blackthorne, an English sailor stranded in Japan, and Toranaga, a powerful daimyo navigating political conflicts.
Their worlds collide, creating tension, drama, and unexpected alliances. The first season also featured Lady Toda Mariko, Toranaga’s translator and advisor, who played a key role in guiding Blackthorne. However, the character will not appear in season 2, having sacrificed herself in the first season to protect Toranaga.
Originally planned as a miniseries, Shōgun was renewed for two more seasons after its massive success and glowing reviews. It also made history as the first Japanese series to win a Primetime Emmy, taking home the award for Outstanding Drama Series at the 76th Emmy Awards in 2024.
