‘Shrek 5’ Delay Explained — And Why It’s a Good Call
The release date for Shrek 5 has been pushed back from December 23, 2026, to June 30, 2027. This new date helps the movie avoid a crowded holiday season filled with other big releases like Avengers: Doomsday, Dune: Part III, and Ice Age 6, all coming out on December 18, 2026. Moving away from such a competitive time gives Shrek 5 a better chance to stand out and reach more viewers.
Universal also moved an untitled Illumination movie from Shrek 5’s original release date to April 16, 2027. The companies behind Shrek 5 are Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation. This film will be the first main Shrek movie since Shrek Forever After came out in 2010. The Shrek world has also grown with two Puss in Boots spin-offs featuring Antonio Banderas.
Zendaya is joining the cast as Shrek’s daughter, while Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey), and Cameron Diaz (Fiona) are all returning to their roles. Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon are directing the movie, with Brad Ableson, who co-directed Minions: The Rise of Gru, also working on it.
The Shrek series is based on a 1990 book called Shrek! by William Steig. The franchise started with the 2001 film, which won an Oscar. It tells the story of an ogre named Shrek who falls in love with Princess Fiona, who is under a curse that keeps her in ogre form. Donkey, Shrek’s funny and loyal friend, adds humor and heart to the story. The movies have been praised for their smart and funny take on classic fairy tales.

Shrek 5 will be the fifth main movie and the seventh film overall in the series. Michael McCullers wrote the screenplay, and the film is produced by Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri and Gina Shay.
Plans for a fifth Shrek movie first started after Shrek 2 in 2004, aiming for a 2013 release. But then, former DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg decided the fourth film, Shrek Forever After, would be the last. After NBCUniversal bought DreamWorks Animation in 2016, Universal announced it would bring back Shrek 5. Updates kept coming until February 2025, when the movie was officially announced with a teaser trailer.
The new release date in the summer of 2027 is actually a good move. It gives the movie more room to breathe without fighting for attention during the busy holiday season. This can help Shrek 5 reach a bigger audience and avoid getting lost among other blockbusters.
Shrek 5 is now set to hit theaters across the United States on June 30, 2027.
