Apple TV has spent the past few years building one of the strongest science fiction lineups in streaming. Among its biggest hits is ‘Silo’, the dystopian drama adapted from Hugh Howey’s bestselling novels, which wrapped its third season on September 4.

Another major player in that lineup is ‘Dark Matter’, the mind-bending series created by Blake Crouch from his 2016 novel. The show follows Jason Dessen, a physicist played by Joel Edgerton, who is kidnapped and finds himself trapped in a parallel universe.

Now, ‘Dark Matter’ has earned some impressive praise from within the Apple TV family. Howey recently took to Threads to share his enthusiasm for Crouch’s series. Responding to a user who urged others to start watching the show, Howey encouraged fans to get on board. He went further, declaring ‘Dark Matter’ the best show currently airing.

The endorsement highlights the sense of camaraderie among sci-fi creators. While ‘Silo’ and ‘Dark Matter’ tell very different stories, both reflect Apple’s appetite for ambitious, thought-provoking science fiction.

The praise comes as both shows are performing strongly on Apple TV’s streaming charts. ‘Dark Matter’ recently ranked third worldwide and fourth in the U.S., while ‘Silo’ placed fourth globally and sixth in the U.S.

That’s especially impressive for ‘Silo’, given that its season finale arrived about a month ago. Meanwhile, ‘Dark Matter’ is still rolling out new episodes of its second season every Friday.

‘Dark Matter’ premiered in May 2024 with Edgerton leading the cast alongside Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi and Oakes Fegley. By the end of its first season, the show had fully adapted Crouch’s novel.

Apple TV renewed the series for a second season in August 2024. Season 2 premiered on August 28, continuing the story beyond the original book. Critics have described the series as offering one of the clearest and most compelling takes on the multiverse in modern TV. Its focus on character and emotion over spectacle has helped it stand out in a crowded genre.

Howey isn’t alone in his admiration. Season 1 holds an 81% score on Rotten Tomatoes, while Season 2 currently sits at 82%. Many reviewers have praised the show’s restraint and its emotional core. The series has become a must-watch for sci-fi fans and newcomers to the genre alike.

Crouch serves as creator, showrunner, and writer, guiding the adaptation of his own work. Edgerton and Connelly also serve as executive producers alongside Crouch’s wife, Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry.

Ben-Zekry has revealed that the team pitched Season 2 to Apple as the second chapter of a planned trilogy. That suggests the creative team already has a clear long-term vision for where the story could go next.

With Season 2 still unfolding, fans have plenty to look forward to in the coming weeks. New episodes continue to arrive every Friday on Apple TV. If the team gets its wish, a third season could eventually complete the trilogy. For now, Howey’s endorsement is giving the series an extra boost as more viewers discover what all the buzz is about.
