Reflecting on both his career and his family, Caine said, “I’ve been married for 52 years. I have loads of photographs but none are of any of the movies I am in, it’s just family, because that’s my life.”
Caine officially confirmed his retirement from acting on October 13, 2023. Speaking to Martha Kearney on BBC Radio’s Today programme, he explained that he decided to step away mainly because the chances of landing leading roles at his age were decreasing.
Referring to his recent film The Great Escaper, he said, “I keep saying I’m going to retire, well I am now, because I figured, I’ve had a picture which is — I played the lead and it’s got incredible reviews. The only parts I’m liable to get now are old men, 90-year-old men, and I thought well I might as well leave with all this. I’ve got wonderful reviews. What am I going to do to beat this?”
The festival appearance allowed fans and the film community to celebrate Caine’s decades-long career while also seeing a personal side of the actor with his family.
