SNL Star Slams SNAP Freeze, Criticizes Racist Reactions Targeting Black Families
“Saturday Night Live” star Michael Che is criticizing the suspension of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which started on Saturday due to the ongoing government shutdown.
Che shared his thoughts in an Instagram post, calling the freeze “really f**** up.”
He also addressed what he sees as a racial angle to public reactions online, writing, “I keep seeing a lotta racist videos celebrating (mostly black) families not being able to buy groceries. There’s this weird idea that since some people have taken advantage of welfare benefits in the hood, NOBODY should receive help, at all?”
Che continued, “This country is built on greedy mothe***** taking shortcuts and gaming the system to their benefit, but for some reason, when poor people find a way to turn a nickel into a dime, they’re judged more severely, especially Blacks.”
The comedian shared personal experiences to illustrate the struggles faced by low-income families. “I grew up on free cheese and powdered milk and waiting for your friends to leave the store so they won’t see me pay with stamps. That sh** ain’t as glamorous as it sounds. I promise,” Che wrote.
The SNAP freeze began after the federal government shut down on October 1 because lawmakers could not pass a funding bill. Republicans in the Senate are reportedly short by 60 votes to approve their proposed bill, leaving Democrats a chance to push back on key issues.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which manages SNAP, announced on October 26 that benefits would be stopped starting November 1.
However, two federal judges in Massachusetts and Rhode Island ruled that the administration must use contingency funds to pay at least part of the SNAP benefits. The Trump administration has until Monday to respond to these court decisions.
Che’s post highlights growing concern over how the shutdown and SNAP freeze are affecting vulnerable families, particularly in Black communities.
Che’s comments bring attention to a real problem that goes beyond politics. The SNAP freeze affects millions who rely on these benefits to put food on the table. It’s a reminder that policies have real human consequences. What do you think about this issue? Share your thoughts in the comments.
