Snoop Dogg has taken a surprising turn in his public approach to LGBTQ+ issues, using his children’s show Doggyland to highlight acceptance and family diversity.

The rapper partnered with GLAAD to support Spirit Day, an initiative aimed at preventing bullying against LGBTQ+ youth.

As part of the campaign, Snoop spoke with Jeremy Beloate, a former contestant on The Voice and a member of the LGBTQ+ community, about their new collaboration on the song Love Is Love.

The track appears in Doggyland, Snoop’s animated YouTube series for children. “It’s a beautiful thing that kids can have parents of all walks and be shown love, to be taught what love is…being able to have parents from all walks of life, whether it be two fathers, two mothers, whatever it is, love is the key,” Snoop said during their discussion.

In the series, Beloate voices a puppy named Zippy, who joins the other characters to sing the song about love and family. Snoop voices Bow Wizzle, one of the main pups. The lyrics celebrate all kinds of families, including same-sex couples: “Our parents are different / No two are the same / But the one thing that’s for certain is the love won’t change,” and “Families are special / They are so unique / Everybody’s got a purpose, more than what you see / We love you, parents / We love you so.” You can check out the song on YouTube.

Snoop explained the message behind the song in a statement: “At the end of the day, it’s all about love — that’s what we’re teachin’ the kids with ‘Love Is Love.’ Partnering with GLAAD for Spirit Day just felt right, because spreading love and respect for everybody is what real gangstas do. We’re showin’ the next generation that kindness is cool, inclusion is powerful, and love always wins.”

However, Snoop’s change in approach comes after a recent incident that left him publicly unsettled. On the It’s Giving podcast, he recalled taking his grandson to see Pixar’s 2022 movie Lightyear, where a character has two mothers.

Snoop admitted he was caught off guard and unsure how to answer his grandson’s questions. “They just said, she and she had a baby — they’re both women. How does she have a baby? It f**** me up. I’m like, scared to go to the movies. Y’all throwing me in the middle of s*** that I don’t have an answer for,”* he said. He also noted that he felt young children might be too young for some of these stories.

Snoop’s past comments on LGBTQ+ issues have drawn criticism over the years. He has called Caitlyn Jenner a “science project” and used an anti-gay slur on Instagram in 2014. Recently, some fans have even called for him to be removed as the headline performer at the Australian Football League Grand Final. Observers suggest his shift may be influenced more by public backlash than a fully personal change in perspective.

Still, the Doggyland project represents a clear effort to promote inclusion and show kids that families can look different but still be full of love.
