‘Sonic 4’ Teaser Trailer Reveals Title and Brings Back Beloved Fan-Favorite Character
A brand-new teaser for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has confirmed that Jim Carrey will be back as Dr. Robotnik, delighting fans who thought the actor might have retired. The trailer opens with Amy Rose’s hammer smashing through a surface to reveal the Chaos Emeralds, while Carrey’s iconic voice warns, “You think your world is safe, but your time is about to run out. The chaos has only just begun.”
The teaser also gives glimpses of the returning and new characters. Sonic will once again be voiced by Ben Schwartz, while Idris Elba is set to play Knuckles and Colleen O’Shaughnessey returns as Tails.
Other confirmed cast members include Keanu Reeves as Shadow, James Marsden and Tika Sumpter as Tom and Maddie Wachowski, Kristen Bell as Amy Rose, and Metal Sonic, who was teased at the end of Sonic 3. Fans have already noticed a Sonic Boom reference hidden in the emeralds.

Carrey’s return has drawn attention because he has previously suggested that he might retire from acting. Back in 2022, after Sonic the Hedgehog 2, he said, “Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious. It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.”
He has also shared why he came back for Sonic 3, admitting that financial reasons played a role. “I came back to this universe because, first of all, I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch,” Carrey said. “And, you know, it’s just… I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly.”
The actor also spoke about his life outside Hollywood, saying, “I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas. I really love my spiritual life and I feel like — and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists — I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is set to hit theaters on March 19, 2027. A spin-off movie is also planned for 2028, with fans speculating that Shadow the Hedgehog may take the lead.
Carrey’s return adds star power and excitement to the franchise, showing that even a legendary actor who has considered retirement can’t resist the world of Sonic. Do you think Jim Carrey will deliver his best Dr. Robotnik yet? Share your thoughts in the comments.
