Sony Considering Return of Tobey Maguire & Andrew Garfield Outside the MCU

Sony Pictures initially planned spin-off films featuring Spider-Man villains after the release of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” (2014), but scrapped the idea due to its reception. In February 2015, Sony entered a collaboration with Marvel Studios to integrate Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

This partnership resulted in the release of “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017), “Spider-Man: Far From Home” (2019), and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (2021). Concurrently, Sony independently produced “Venom” (2018) and its sequel “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” (2021), as well as “Morbius” (2022), all of which featured connections to the MCU through mid-credits scenes.

Upon the release of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ which featured Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, MCU fans interpreted their appearance as a hopeful sign for their potential return to more permanent roles.

However, recent rumors suggest otherwise. According to the latest speculation, Sony is contemplating the return of both actors but not within the MCU. Allegedly, Sony has devised its own Multiverse plans and aims to incorporate both characters into these schemes.

These rumors stem from Daniel Richtman, a prominent leaker and scooper in the industry.

Fans reacted negatively to this news, particularly given the current state of the SSU’s quality. The majority are opposed to the idea of Maguire and Garfield sharing the cinematic universe with characters like Madame Web and Morbius.
