Amazon MGM Studios has released the first look at Sophie Turner stepping into the iconic role of Lara Croft for the upcoming live-action Tomb Raider series, created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Turner, best known for her role on Game of Thrones, channels the classic video game version of Croft in the new image, signaling that production on the Prime Video series is officially underway.

In the photo, Turner wears the signature outfit from the original 1996 Tomb Raider game, updated slightly from Tomb Raider II. She sports a teal tank top, short shorts, a leather backpack, red-tinted sunglasses, and a braided ponytail, fully embracing the adventurous archaeologist’s look. Plot details for the series are still being kept under wraps, but Waller-Bridge’s adaptation promises to expand Croft’s world in new ways.

The series features an impressive cast alongside Turner. Three-time Oscar-nominated actress Sigourney Weaver joins as Evelyn Wallis, a mysterious and ambitious character created for the series. Jason Isaacs, known from Harry Potter and White Lotus, plays Croft’s uncle Atlas DeMornay, while Martin Bobb-Semple takes on the role of Croft’s tech support friend, Zip.

Fans of the games will also recognize Bill Paterson as Croft’s butler Winston, and Celia Imrie appears as Francine, the head of advancement at the British Museum, described as someone who is “focused solely on raising funds and glasses of champagne,” according to a press release.

Turner inherits the role from a line of actresses who brought Croft to life on the big screen, including Angelina Jolie in the early 2000s and Alicia Vikander in the 2018 reboot. Vikander had been set to return for a sequel, but in a 2022 interview with Entertainment Weekly, she expressed uncertainty about the project following Amazon’s acquisition of MGM. “With the MGM and Amazon buyout, I have no clue. Now it’s kind of politics,” Vikander said. “I think Misha and I have been ready, so it’s kind of in somebody else’s hands, to be honest.”

Other cast members confirmed for the series include Jack Bannon, John Heffernan, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, and August Wittgenstein. A release date for the show has not yet been announced.

The first look photo shows Turner fully embodying Croft’s adventurous spirit, and fans are already reacting with excitement online. It seems the new series will honor the classic video game aesthetic while introducing fresh storylines and characters to expand the Tomb Raider universe.
