‘South Park’ Scores $1.5 Billion Streaming Deal with Paramount+
The creators of “South Park,” Trey Parker and Matt Stone, have reportedly made a huge deal with Paramount+ to bring their long-running show to the streaming service. According to a report from the Los Angeles Times, this deal is worth $1.5 billion over five years, or about $300 million each year.
The deal would give Paramount+ the global streaming rights to “South Park,” a big win for the platform.
Sources who spoke to Variety confirmed that a deal has been made, but they didn’t share exact details. Paramount hasn’t officially commented on the news, possibly because the deal is still not completely finalized.
This agreement comes after some tension between Parker, Stone, and Paramount. The two creators accused Paramount’s incoming president, Jeff Shell, of interfering in their earlier contract talks with Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix.
Hollywood Reporter revealed that there was an earlier plan for a $3 billion deal spanning ten years, but the company Skydance, which is buying Paramount, didn’t agree to that deal.
During this drama, the premiere of “South Park” Season 27 was pushed back by two weeks to July 23. Parker and Stone shared their frustration on the show’s official Twitter account.
The new deal will bring regular episodes of “South Park” to Paramount+ in the U.S. for the very first time. This is a big change since HBO Max, under Warner Bros. Discovery, used to have exclusive streaming rights to the series. Paramount+ had only shown a few “South Park” specials before. That HBO Max deal ended last month.
This news comes just before the new season of “South Park” begins on Comedy Central on July 23. Parker and Stone are also expected to appear at San Diego Comic-Con around the same time.
Besides this streaming agreement, Parker and Stone are working on a new deal with Paramount to keep making fresh episodes for Comedy Central after their current contract ends in 2027. Their previous contract, signed in 2021, was worth $900 million and covered both the main series and specials made for Paramount+.
Getting exclusive rights to stream “South Park” is a big boost for Paramount+, especially as it competes with other big services like Netflix, Disney+, and HBO Max. This deal also happens while Skydance’s purchase of Paramount is still in progress.
“South Park” started back in 1997 and has grown into a cultural icon known for its sharp satire and bold takes on politics, pop culture, and everyday life.
This update comes from reports by the Los Angeles Times, and Variety.
