‘Spider-Man 5’ Could Be a Long Wait, and Sony Finally Explained Why
Spider-Man fans may have to wait quite a while before Tom Holland puts the suit back on for another solo movie. After the huge response to Spider-Man: Brand New Day, many people expected Sony and Marvel to move quickly on a fifth film. Instead, the latest comments from Sony Pictures CEO Ravi Ahuja suggest that the studio is in no rush to set a release date for Spider-Man 5.
Ahuja spoke about the future of the franchise in an interview with Variety, and his answer was pretty clear. Sony does not currently have a release date locked in for the next Holland-led Spider-Man movie. He also suggested that taking a couple of years to develop and prepare another film would be normal. That may not sound like an extremely long wait, but for fans who are used to seeing Holland’s Spider-Man return fairly quickly, it could feel like a major change.
The timing is especially interesting because Spider-Man: Brand New Day has given the character another huge boost. The movie has reportedly performed extremely well around the world, with some markets even seeing it outperform Avengers: Endgame. That kind of success would normally make a studio want to move fast. Sony, however, appears to be taking a different approach and seems more interested in giving the next movie enough time to come together properly rather than simply rushing it into production.
One reason for the slower schedule is Sony’s larger Spider-Man lineup. The studio already has another major Spider-Man movie coming, although it is animated rather than live-action. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is currently scheduled for June 2027 and will finish the popular animated trilogy. The movie has already faced several delays, so its place on the calendar is important for Sony. With that film taking up a major release window, the studio has another reason to give Holland’s next adventure some breathing room.
The possible wait also breaks a pattern that fans had become used to. Holland’s earlier solo Spider-Man movies arrived within two years of each other. Spider-Man: Homecoming came in 2017, Spider-Man: Far From Home followed in 2019, and Spider-Man: No Way Home arrived in 2021. That quick pace changed with Brand New Day, which came after a much longer gap. If Spider-Man 5 takes another couple of years to arrive, the wait between Holland’s movies could become even longer than fans expected.
Sony’s changing strategy may also have something to do with the superhero movie market itself. Ahuja has spoken about the importance of making superhero movies feel special instead of assuming audiences will show up simply because a famous character is involved. The studio appears to want its biggest comic book projects to have a strong reason to exist, rather than releasing another sequel just because the previous movie was successful.

That could be good news for Spider-Man 5. A longer development period could give the filmmakers more time to decide where Peter Parker should go next and what kind of story would actually feel fresh. After the huge multiverse story of No Way Home and the events surrounding Brand New Day, expectations are already extremely high. Simply repeating the same formula probably would not be enough.
For now, Sony has other projects competing for attention. Beyond the Spider-Verse remains a major priority, while Spider-Noir, starring Nicolas Cage, is also part of the company’s expanding Spider-Man universe. There are plenty of other major superhero movies rumored for the coming years as well, making Sony’s release calendar increasingly crowded.
What should Sony focus on before making Spider-Man 5?
