‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ Composer Gets Emotional Over Finished Film
Few animated franchises have built the kind of devotion that Sony’s Spider-Verse films have. Since 2018, fans have treated each chapter as a creative leap, and the music has been a big part of that. Daniel Pemberton is known for ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ and ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,’ and he is credited on the third film as well.
That makes the long wait for the finale feel even heavier. The third installment was originally set for release on March 29, 2024, but Sony removed it from the release calendar entirely. For a stretch, nobody outside the production seemed sure when audiences would see the trilogy’s conclusion.
Now Pemberton is offering a rare glimpse of how the finished film plays, and it is an emotional one. Marvel Updates, citing Deadline, shared that Pemberton said he cried while watching the movie. “The last part I saw made me cry, multiple times… I think everybody’s going to be in for a real treat,” the composer said.
He did not say which scenes got to him, and that restraint fits with how he has handled the film before. Pemberton has said he is “sworn to secrecy” about exact details. He also admitted to the pressure of closing out a beloved trilogy, telling GamesRadar+ that you don’t want to “Godfather it.”
That pressure has played out in public. In September 2024, a report claimed that the film was undergoing a creative overhaul and would not arrive until 2027, and Pemberton pushed back on X, suggesting that not everything online is accurate. His reaction this time reads as the opposite of those anxious headlines.
The timing of his comments is notable. According to Deadline, director Bob Persichetti recently appeared at New York Comic Con, where he said audience expectations for the franchise have become limitless. Attendees were shown the same work-in-progress footage that screened at CinemaCon in April, while Sony is holding back an official teaser for now. So far, the public has seen only a small piece of what the team has built.
What fans do know is that the story picks up right where the last one stopped. The film begins immediately after the events of ‘Across the Spider-Verse,’ with Miles Morales trapped and on the run in an alternate universe while trying to save his family. The voice cast includes Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Brian Tyree Henry, Jake Johnson, Oscar Isaac and Nicolas Cage, among others.
Pemberton’s tears also line up with what the filmmakers have said about the tone. Phil Lord and Chris Miller have described the film as a satisfying conclusion that goes deeper into the emotional bonds between Miles, Gwen, Peter and others. A composer who has lived inside this world for years becoming emotional is a promising sign for that approach.
‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ is scheduled for release in the United States on June 18, 2027. Whether the finale lands as hard for audiences as it did for the man who scored it remains to be seen. Still, after such a long wait, an early reaction like this from someone so close to the film is the kind of news fans have been hoping for.
