The wait for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse just got longer. Again. Sony has decided to delay the movie once more, pushing its release back by three weeks. Instead of swinging into theaters on June 4, 2027, it’s now set for June 25, 2027.

According to Variety, Sony made the change so more kids could watch the movie during summer vacation. On the original date, only 65% of schools in the US would have been on break.

By late June, that jumps to 100%. Sony is also hoping this new date works better for international viewers.

This isn’t the first delay for the movie. In fact, fans have been dealing with delays since the film was first announced years ago. Originally, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse was expected to release in 2024, but that date kept slipping. First to 2025. Then possibly 2026. And now finally, 2027. Even the latest delay adds to what’s become a long string of setbacks.

The movie is the third and final chapter in the animated Spider-Verse trilogy that started with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in 2018, followed by Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in 2023.

The upcoming film will pick up right after the cliffhanger ending of Across the Spider-Verse, with Miles Morales running from Spider-People across the multiverse. At CinemaCon earlier this year, co-writer Phil Lord told fans that “Gwen and his other friends may or may not be enough to help him save the family that’s been the leading part of the entire system.”

Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson are directing Beyond the Spider-Verse. The script is written by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who also worked on the previous two films, alongside David Callaham. Producers include Lord and Miller themselves, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Jinko Gotoh.

The project’s troubled production has been no secret. Sony reportedly paused major work on the film’s script and visuals back when they were struggling to finish Across the Spider-Verse.

Even after that movie’s release, progress on Beyond the Spider-Verse stayed slow. Reports from sources like The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline explained that Sony had removed the film from its release calendar during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, which stopped voice actors from recording their parts. After the strike ended, voice work resumed, but the film’s release date remained unclear.

In interviews, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller stressed that they didn’t want to rush the project. “We won’t reserve a release date if it doesn’t fit our schedule,” Miller said, according to Variety.

Part of the delay has also been tied to changes in the animation process. While Sony’s CEO Tony Vinciquerra said the company was exploring AI to help lower costs, Miller was quick to reassure fans that generative AI wouldn’t be used in Beyond the Spider-Verse. He explained that the team wanted to focus on original animation styles and respect the work of human artists.

The pressure is clearly on for the creators. Composer Daniel Pemberton admitted to feeling the weight of expectations, saying they were determined not to make the mistakes common in third installments of movie series. The team wants to make sure the trilogy’s ending feels satisfying, emotional, and worth the long wait.

Fans, however, can’t help but notice just how long that wait has become. From its first plans back in 2018, when work began on a sequel to Into the Spider-Verse, to all the stops and starts along the way, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse has faced multiple delays, at least four major ones so far. The latest delay is just the most recent in a pattern that’s frustrated fans around the world.

Even now, with a new release date of June 25, 2027, it’s hard to say if that date will hold. As Sony has shown before, anything can change.

The news was first reported by Variety.
