‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Cements Its Place Among the Highest-Grossing Movies Ever With a Massive Worldwide Haul

Every so often, a movie comes along that makes the box office record books feel like a moving target. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ has been doing exactly that since late July, and its global run is now the subject of another wave of celebration. Tom Holland’s fourth solo outing as Peter Parker has become one of the defining hits of the decade.

The film launched with a $932 million worldwide opening, the second-biggest of all time behind the $1.22 billion of ‘Avengers: Endgame’. It cleared $1 billion in just 6 days and reached $2 billion after 3 weekends, making it the second-fastest film to hit that mark after ‘Endgame’. Only 8 movies in history have crossed $2 billion.

Those milestones alone would be enough to make it a phenomenon, but the run kept going. Deadline reported that it recently became the highest-grossing film ever in the domestic market, passing ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’. That achievement set the stage for the latest global total.

MCU Film News shared on X on September 20 that ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has grossed roughly $2.45 billion worldwide. The post has drawn 8,951 views, 606 likes, and 51 reposts. It is a striking number for a film that has been in theaters for about 7 weeks.

At $2.45 billion, the film is the third-highest-grossing movie of all time. It trails only 2009’s ‘Avatar’ at $2.9 billion and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at roughly $2.8 billion. It sits ahead of ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ at $2.3 billion and ‘Titanic’ at $2.2 billion.

It is also one of just 3 superhero films to pass $2 billion, along with ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’. For Sony, it is the biggest release in the studio’s history. Deadline also noted that it is the top-grossing movie for both director Destin Daniel Cretton and Zendaya.

Momentum was clear early on. The film became the fastest to reach every major domestic milestone, from $400 million in 6 days to $900 million in 36 days. It also led the box office for 6 consecutive weekends, the longest streak since ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’.

The next question is how much further it can go. MovieWeb has suggested that the film has a real shot at becoming one of only 2 movies to gross more than $2.5 billion, joining ‘Avatar’ and ‘Endgame’. That would require another $50 million or so.

There is a complication, though. Deadline noted that ‘Avengers: Endgame’ is getting a re-release this month and will likely extend its lead over ‘Brand New Day’. That means the film may not climb the all-time chart, even if its total keeps rising.

Variety has also pointed out that a domestic total of $1 billion looks unlikely at this stage without a re-release. The film is nearing the end of its theatrical run, and new movies are arriving that will take up more screens. Still, even a modest tail would push it closer to further milestones.
