‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Director Destin Daniel Cretton Takes Center Stage in New Featurette as the Record-Breaking Run Rolls On
Few superhero movies have owned a summer the way ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ has, and the Destin Daniel Cretton-directed blockbuster is still finding ways to stay in the conversation. Even as its theatrical run winds down, Sony and Marvel keep feeding fans fresh material from Tom Holland’s fourth outing as the web-slinger.
The movie’s numbers explain why the studios have no reason to slow down. On September 16, it passed ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ to become the highest-grossing domestic release ever, breaking a $936 million record that had stood for over a decade. It has also climbed to become the third-highest-grossing film ever worldwide.
The latest piece of promotion is a brand-new featurette for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, shared via IGN, and this time the spotlight lands squarely on the filmmaker. The clip runs just over a minute and features Cretton, credited as director, seated on a darkened stage as he talks about the project.
It’s a fitting moment for Cretton to step forward. Critics widely credited his direction for the film’s success, with one review praising his beautiful direction and some of the best action sequences in any Spider-Man movie. The same review noted that the crew clearly put extra care into the cinematography, even recreating several classic comic book covers.
NPR’s Bob Mondello was also impressed, arguing that Cretton had matured a teen franchise into something more adult and emotionally complex. That grown-up tone has been one of the biggest talking points among fans since opening weekend.

Cretton’s path to the project took shape over several years. He was hired to direct by October 2024, and the title, taken from the 2008 comic storyline that reset Spider-Man’s status quo, was revealed in March 2025. He also rewrote the script alongside Justin Kuritzkes, building on the work of returning writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.
The gamble clearly paid off for Sony. Following the film’s massive success, Cretton signed a 3-year deal with Sony Pictures, a sign the studio wants to keep him close for whatever comes next.
This featurette continues a promotional strategy that stood out from the start. During production, Sony released a 60-second vignette from the first day of filming, showing Holland suiting up, meeting young fans and shooting a stunt on top of what looked like a tank.

A later featurette highlighted the explosive opening sequence, with Holland claiming the film has some of the best action in the franchise. Cretton said in that clip that the crowds of fans watching the stunt meant a lot to him and the whole team.
The new clip lands right as the movie prepares to jump to home viewing. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ arrives on digital platforms on October 6, while Sony has extended its theatrical run until November 16.
There’s also a second theatrical wave on the horizon. Sony is planning a re-release with previously unseen footage, including a scene featuring Rosario Dawson that didn’t make the version audiences saw in July. No date has been set yet for that return.
The stakes are real, too. The film currently sits at $950.6 million in North America, and the re-release could help it become the first movie to cross $1 billion at the domestic box office.
With a budget of $225 million and a worldwide haul of roughly $2.496 billion, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has already rewritten the record books. Featurettes like this one give fans a chance to see the people who made it happen before the movie heads into their living rooms.
For Cretton in particular, this feels like a well-earned moment in front of the camera after years of work behind it. Whatever Sony has planned for Peter Parker next, the director has put himself firmly at the center of the franchise’s future.
