‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is Barreling Toward A Billion-Dollar Overseas Milestone
The 2026 box office has already delivered one of the wildest summers in recent memory, and Marvel’s friendly neighborhood web-slinger just keeps adding fuel to the fire. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has become the movie event nobody quite expected to hit this hard, turning what was supposed to be a solid summer tentpole into a full blown cultural phenomenon.
Tom Holland and Zendaya returned for the fourth solo Spidey outing under director Destin Daniel Cretton, and the results have been staggering from the jump. The film opened with a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” grade on CinemaScore exit polls, and it launched to a heroic $932 million globally, the second biggest worldwide debut ever behind only “Avengers: Endgame”.
Now the numbers coming out of the international market are turning heads all over again. According to a post from the account Global Box Office, ‘Brand New Day’ crossed the $700 million mark internationally, with $150 million of that coming from China alone, and the film is now tracking to surpass the $1 billion milestone overseas by this coming weekend.
China has genuinely been the story within the story. The film’s Chinese opening was tracking toward the biggest debut for a Hollywood live action release in the country since “Avengers: Endgame”, and it grossed $121.3 million in its first five days in the Middle Kingdom. Distributor Sony Pictures Entertainment confirmed the film had earned $121 million in China since its late July release, a genuine surprise given how choosy Chinese audiences have been with recent superhero fare.
The overseas surge is only part of a much bigger picture. ‘Brand New Day’ hit $1 billion worldwide in just six days, a feat only a handful of films in history have managed, and within a week it had already generated $1.155 billion total, including $449 million domestically and $706.3 million internationally, making it the highest grossing movie of 2026.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has been vocal about the reception, calling the opening a truly phenomenal result and thanking audiences for showing up the way the studio hoped they would, a sentiment he shared in comments reported by Variety. Sony chairman Tom Rothman echoed the excitement in his own way, crediting everyone from the filmmakers to the marketing team for the film’s run.
With the China numbers holding strong and international audiences still packing theaters, industry watchers are already speculating about a run at $2 billion worldwide, a club that only a small handful of films have ever joined. ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ fell just short of that number, finishing with $1.9 billion despite not playing in China at all, which makes ‘Brand New Day’ having both a China release and this kind of momentum a genuinely different equation.
If the current pace holds, this weekend could mark the moment Peter Parker officially becomes a billion dollar overseas draw all over again. Do you think ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has what it takes to swing all the way to $2 billion worldwide?
