‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is Now Just Weeks Away From Rewriting Box Office History

Superhero movies have had their fair share of box office milestones over the years, but few have managed to sustain the kind of staying power currently on display at theaters right now. Five weekends in, one film continues to defy the usual pattern of steep drop-offs that typically follow a blockbuster’s opening.

That film has now settled so firmly into the top spot that it’s practically become a fixture of the late-summer box office landscape, holding off new releases week after week without much of a fight. What started as a record-breaking debut has since turned into one of the most dominant theatrical runs in recent memory.

At No. 1 again this weekend was Sony and Marvel’s ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’ It earned $22.2 million through Sunday, dropping just 44% from the previous week’s earnings. That figure pushes the superhero epic’s domestic total to a staggering $891 million.

That milestone puts ‘Brand New Day’ just $45 million away from surpassing ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ and its unadjusted domestic total of $936 million, which has stood as the all-time North American box office record since 2015. Once it clears that mark, the film will be on pace to potentially become the first movie ever to cross $1 billion domestically.

The film’s fifth weekend performance also lands it among box office history’s best, ranking as the tenth-best fifth weekend of all time. Internationally, ‘Brand New Day’ has continued climbing as well, having already passed $2 billion worldwide and closing in on ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’s’ global total to potentially claim third place on the all-time worldwide chart.

Behind it, ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ delivered a surprise second-place finish with a $15.4 million opening weekend, an especially notable result given the film was nearly written off entirely by Warner Bros. before Ketchup Entertainment stepped in to save it. Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ followed in third with $14.3 million in its seventh weekend, bringing its domestic total to $563.8 million.

‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ rounded out the middle of the pack with $10.1 million in its second weekend, while ‘The Dog Stars’ struggled badly in its debut, opening to just $8 million domestically despite a production budget north of $80 million. Ridley Scott’s post-apocalyptic drama landed a 40% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a “C+” CinemaScore grade, a rough combination for any film hoping to build momentum in the weeks ahead.

Meanwhile, ‘Brand New Day’ shows no signs of slowing its historic march. With Labor Day weekend still to come, the film appears well positioned to officially claim the all-time domestic crown within the next several days, a milestone that once seemed almost unthinkable for any single release to reach.

For a film that already broke records with its opening weekend and became the fastest movie ever to hit $800 million domestically, this latest chapter feels like the natural continuation of a genuinely historic theatrical run. Few could have predicted just how long ‘Brand New Day’ would keep dominating the box office conversation this deep into its release.
