‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Just Did Something No Movie Has Managed in Decades

That month-long reign began with a record-setting $360 million domestic debut, officially the biggest opening weekend in box office history, surpassing the previous benchmark set by 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ The film maintained its grip on the top spot through five consecutive weekends, with its most recent frame bringing in $22.5 million, a comparatively strong 42% drop that speaks to the film’s unusually gentle decline compared to typical blockbuster patterns.

That staying power has translated directly into historic box office totals. ‘Brand New Day’ has now crossed $2.33 billion worldwide, officially surpassing ‘Titanic’s’ global total to claim the No. 4 spot on the all-time worldwide chart, trailing only ‘Avatar: The Way of Water,’ ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ and the original ‘Avatar.’ Domestically, the film has climbed to $891 million, putting it just behind ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’s’ long-standing North American record of $936 million.

What makes this run especially remarkable is the speed at which it’s happened. Titanic needed years of theatrical re-releases and repeated cultural revivals to build its box office legacy, while ‘Brand New Day’ needed just 31 days to pass it entirely. The film also became the second-fastest movie in history to cross $2 billion globally, trailing only ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ record-setting pace.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Tom Holland, the film has continued adding tens of millions to its total nearly every single week since release, a pace of consistent growth that’s kept it locked at the top of domestic charts far longer than most modern blockbusters manage. With Ne Zha 2’s roughly $2.2 billion worldwide total now within striking distance, the film appears poised to keep climbing the all-time rankings even further.

For a franchise that’s produced its fair share of box office milestones over the years, holding the No. 1 domestic spot for an entire month puts ‘Brand New Day’ in a category of its own. The last time any film managed that feat, audiences were still discovering James Cameron’s ocean liner epic for the very first time.
