‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Just Unleashed Its Most Comic Accurate Villain Yet

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has never had an easy time in the MCU, but ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ looks set to push Peter Parker further than ever before. Four years have passed since the events of ‘No Way Home,’ and Peter is now living alone after erasing himself and the memories of him from those he loves, throwing himself wholeheartedly into protecting his city as Spider-Man full time. That kind of isolation comes at a cost, and the film’s marketing has spent months teasing just how crowded Peter’s rogues gallery has become this time around.

With the July 31 release date closing in, Sony has been rolling out promotional art showcasing villains like Tarantula, Boomerang, and the returning Scorpion, played once again by Michael Mando as Mac Gargan. Fans have spent weeks piecing together clues from posters, LEGO sets, and pop-up displays scattered across New York City, all pointing toward one especially menacing new arrival.

That arrival is Tombstone, and a new image shared by DiscussingFilm on X has given fans their clearest look yet at the character in action. The image lines up closely with earlier promotional art for the film, which was nearly an exact recreation of the cover of The Spectacular Spider-Man No. 142, in which Tombstone holds a defeated Spider-Man on a construction girder atop a building. It is a striking, comic accurate visual that immediately signals how physically dominant this villain is meant to be.

Tombstone is played by Marvin Jones III, also known as Krondon, and his chalk white skin, filed teeth and muscular build make for a comic accurate take on one of Spider-Man’s most physically imposing enemies. This is not Jones’s first time bringing the character to life. He previously voiced Tombstone in 2018’s ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ and is now bringing the character into live action for the first time, marking a rare full circle moment for both the actor and the role.

In the comics, Tombstone’s terrifying presence comes from more than just his size. He gains his superhuman strength, stamina, durability and reflexes after exposure to an experimental Oscorp gas, with nearly indestructible skin and enhanced healing similar to Luke Cage. That kind of durability could make him one of the toughest physical threats Peter has faced yet, comic book radioactive spiders aside.

A separate New York City pop-up tied to Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios also gave fans a closer look at the live-action version of the character, alongside new details about Liza Colón-Zayas’s Detective Jean DeWolff, who appears to be working with Spider-Man as he hunts down the Hand, as first reported by Nerdtropolis. With Tombstone, Scorpion, Boomerang, Tarantula and the Hand all circling Peter Parker, some fans have speculated that Tombstone could be the one pulling the strings behind the film’s entire villain roster.
