‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Officially Becomes the Highest-Grossing Domestic Film of All Time

Box office records have a way of feeling permanent right up until the moment they finally fall, and few marks have felt quite as untouchable over the past decade as this particular one. For more than ten years, one film has sat comfortably atop the domestic box office chart, weathering every attempted challenger from Marvel’s biggest crossovers to Disney’s most ambitious sequels.

That challenger finally arrived this summer in the form of Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Sadie Sink’s latest Marvel outing, and its theatrical run has spent the past several weeks systematically dismantling record after record. The film opened with a staggering $360 million domestic weekend, crossed $2 billion globally faster than almost any release in history, and held the top spot at the North American box office for six consecutive weekends.

Now that record-breaking run has reached its ultimate milestone. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ has officially passed ‘Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens’ to become the highest-grossing domestic film of all time, unseating a record that had stood since 2015.

‘The Force Awakens’ had held the domestic crown for over a decade, sitting at $936.6 million since its release, a mark that survived challenges from franchises as massive as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s own ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ which came agonizingly close in 2019 but ultimately fell just short at $858.3 million. ‘Brand New Day’ didn’t just approach that record; it blew past it with room to spare.

The Marvel-Sony tentpole became the fastest film ever to cross $800 million domestically, doing so in just 19 days compared to ‘The Force Awakens’ previous record of 23 days. It went on to become the fastest movie to cross $900 million as well, hitting that threshold in 36 days versus ‘The Force Awakens’s’ 50-day pace, all while remaining the top film at the domestic box office for six straight weekends before finally slipping to second place behind a new release.

Industry trackers had been projecting a final domestic total somewhere around $960 million once the film’s theatrical window fully closes, giving it a comfortable cushion above ‘The Force Awakens’s’ previous benchmark. That projection put the film roughly $111 million ahead of where ‘Endgame’ stood at the exact same point in its own theatrical run, despite starting that comparison just $3 million ahead.

This marks only the second time in Marvel Cinematic Universe history that one of its films has claimed the number-one spot on an all-time domestic box-office list, arriving after what had been a notably challenging few years for the franchise at large. Beyond the domestic milestone, ‘Brand New Day’ has also continued climbing the worldwide all-time chart, passing ‘The Force Awakens’ global total of $2.07 billion and settling into sixth place on that broader list behind titans like ‘Avatar,’ ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ and ‘Titanic.’

The film’s box office dominance is even more striking given its reported production budget of $225 million, a fraction of the $638 million ‘The Force Awakens’ cost to produce, making the achievement all the more impressive from a pure return-on-investment standpoint. That efficiency, combined with genuinely record-shattering ticket sales, has turned ‘Brand New Day’ into one of the defining box office stories of the year.

For a franchise that had spent recent years searching for its next true blockbuster moment, dethroning a record this deeply entrenched offers about as emphatic a comeback statement as Marvel could have hoped for. With the film’s theatrical run still not fully finished, there’s a real possibility its final domestic total climbs even higher before all is said and done.
