For much of this summer, industry watchers had been tracking exactly that kind of steady climb, wondering not if but when a specific decade-old benchmark would finally give way.

That moment has now officially arrived. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has spent the past several weeks systematically closing in on ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ which had held the domestic box office crown since 2015 with $936 million. After 47 days in theaters, Tom Holland’s latest MCU outing has now surpassed that mark entirely, officially becoming the highest-grossing domestic release of all time with $936.773 million.

The film’s dominance hasn’t stopped there. Now in its seventh weekend of release, ‘Brand New Day’ has racked up records at nearly every milestone along the way, cementing itself as one of the defining box office stories of the entire year.

The film’s path to the top has been genuinely relentless. ‘Brand New Day’ became the fastest movie ever to cross $800 million domestically, taking just 19 days compared to ‘The Force Awakens’ previous benchmark of 23 days, continuing a pattern that saw it repeatedly outpace films like ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at nearly every comparable stage of its run.

Globally, the film’s numbers are even more staggering. Sony and Marvel’s tentpole has now earned a jaw-dropping $2.45 billion worldwide, making it the third-highest-grossing movie of all time, trailing only ‘Avatar’s’ $2.9 billion and ‘Avengers: Endgame’s’ $2.7 billion, while sitting ahead of both ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ and ‘Titanic.’ The film reached $2 billion after just three weekends, making it the second-fastest film in history to hit that threshold behind only ‘Endgame.’

With those numbers now locked in, attention has shifted toward whether ‘Brand New Day’ could become the first film ever to cross $1 billion domestically, though Variety’s reporting suggests that particular milestone remains unlikely without a theatrical re-release given how far along the film’s run already is.

This marks only the second time in Marvel Cinematic Universe history that one of its films has claimed the top spot on an all-time domestic box-office list, arriving after a genuinely challenging stretch for the franchise’s theatrical fortunes in recent years. Directed by ‘Shang-Chi’ filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton, the film picks up directly after ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’s’ ending, which saw the entire world forget Peter Parker ever existed.

The record-breaking run has carried personal significance for Holland as well. With ‘Brand New Day’ pushing his combined career box office past previous benchmarks, Holland has officially become the highest-grossing actor of all time, surpassing both Zoe Saldaña and Scarlett Johansson in the process, a milestone made even more remarkable given he achieved it at just 30 years old.

Between its record-shattering domestic haul, its position among the highest-grossing films ever released worldwide, and Holland’s own personal box office milestone, ‘Brand New Day’ has firmly established itself as far more than just another successful superhero sequel. For a franchise that had spent years searching for its next true blockbuster moment, dethroning a record that had stood untouched for over a decade offers about as definitive a comeback statement as Marvel could have hoped for.
