Some blockbusters burn bright and disappear, while others settle in for the long haul. Sony and Marvel’s ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ is firmly in the second camp, and its box office run continues to defy the usual rules. Weeks after it stopped leading the weekend chart, the film is still making news.

The movie launched on July 31 with a record $360 million domestic opening and a $932 million global debut. Variety reported that it cleared $1 billion worldwide in 6 days and reached $2 billion after 3 weekends, making it the second-fastest film to do so. It was also the fastest to $700 million, $800 million, and $900 million domestically.

Then came the historic moment. Deadline reported that the film became the highest-grossing release ever in the domestic market, passing the $936.66 million of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, which held the record for 10 years. Worldwide, the film stands at $2.45 billion, third all time behind ‘Avatar’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’.

Now the latest weekend has added more numbers to the story. According to box office analyst Luiz Fernando, the film grossed $6.5 million over the 3-day frame, a drop of just 22.6% from the previous weekend despite losing 286 theatres on Friday. It ends the weekend still playing in more than 3,000 theatres and has a domestic cume of $944.5 million.

That total sets up the next benchmark. Fernando says the film could become the first ever to cross $950 million in the US as early as next weekend, and he is eyeing a final domestic run of about $960 million. JoBlo also noted that some observers are wondering whether it might eventually approach $1 billion, though that would require a much longer tail.

The weekend chart shows how much competition has changed. ‘Resident Evil’ opened at No. 1 with $60 million, followed by ‘Practical Magic 2’ with $12.15 million. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ finished third, ahead of ‘The Odyssey’ at $4.9 million, which has $609 million domestically and more than $1.7 billion worldwide.

Earlier trade estimates had the film slightly lower at $6.3 million, but the final numbers landed at $6.5 million. Either way, it is holding better than most films in their 8th frame. Its first 6 weekends were spent at No. 1, a feat shared by only a handful of movies including ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and the first 2 ‘Avatar’ films.

The film’s staying power is part of what makes it so unusual. Most superhero movies suffer steep drops after their opening frames, but this one has posted small declines week after week. The poster attached to Fernando’s post highlights its A CinemaScore, a reminder that word of mouth has been a major factor.

It is also a comeback story for the genre. After a stretch in which superhero movies struggled to feel like events, Tom Holland’s fourth solo outing has reminded audiences what a communal theatrical experience can be. The film’s performance suggests that the appetite for shared spectacle hasn’t gone anywhere.

Looking ahead, the release calendar will shape how much more it can earn. Fresh competition will keep pushing it down the weekend chart, but the film should continue to collect steady business. Whether it hits $960 million or falls just short, the milestones it has already set are likely to stand for years.

For now, every new weekend adds another line to an already crowded list of records. The next one on the horizon is $950 million, and it may arrive sooner than anyone expected. Few films have made the long run look this easy.

Do you think Spider-Man: Brand New Day can reach $960 million domestically?
