‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Swings Sony Pictures to a Massive Profit Jump
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has been one of the defining box office stories of 2026. Since its July 31 release, Tom Holland’s latest Spider-Man adventure has earned about $2.52 billion worldwide, and its debut weekend beat the 3-day North American opening record held by ‘Avengers: Endgame’.
The film has recently passed ‘Endgame’ to become the biggest Marvel film of all time outside China. Its success is now showing up clearly in Sony’s financial results. As Deadline reported, the box office success of ‘Brand New Day’ was the main reason Sony Pictures Entertainment posted earnings of $581 million for the 3 months to September 30.
That marks a huge 527% swing from the $93 million SPE reported for the same period last year, on a dollar basis. According to Chennai Online, SPE’s revenue rose 37% to $3.23 billion. GlobeTV reports that theatrical revenue grew elevenfold to $1.28 billion during the quarter.
While Spider-Man led the charge, he wasn’t working alone. GlobeTV reports that the horror films ‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ and ‘Resident Evil’ also helped drive the studio’s strong quarter.
Chennai Online notes that SPE’s film production, television programming and media networks all contributed to the results. However, it did not provide figures for those divisions.

The movie success arrived during a strong period for Sony as a whole. The company’s operating profit rose 45% to ¥622.3 billion, or about $3.95 billion, beating analyst expectations, according to GlobeTV.
Net income climbed 44% to around ¥450 billion, about $2.8 billion, while revenue increased 10% to roughly ¥3.43 trillion. Sony CFO Lin Tao described the result as a record-high operating income for the second quarter.
Sony’s gaming business also had a strong showing. Operating income in the Game & Network Services segment jumped 83% to ¥220 billion, about $1.4 billion, according to GlobeTV.

PS5 hardware sales slowed, falling to about 2.6 million units from 4 million a year earlier, bringing lifetime sales to 97.9 million, per Implicator. Monthly active PlayStation users rose to 127 million, and digital downloads accounted for 78% of full-game software sales.
The film’s performance has been remarkable from the start. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, it opened to about $360.1 million domestically and crossed $1 billion worldwide in just 6 days, according to Variety.
The movie reportedly cost $225 million to produce, meaning its global haul is more than 11 times its budget. That kind of return explains how a single release could reshape Sony Pictures’ quarterly results.

Sony now heads into the rest of its fiscal year with momentum from both its film and gaming businesses. With ‘Grand Theft Auto VI’ launching on November 19, PlayStation could also get another boost in the months ahead. For Sony Pictures, ‘Brand New Day’ has shown how valuable the Spider-Man franchise remains, both for audiences and for the company’s financial results.
