‘Spider-Noir’ Gets Canceled, but Amazon Is Already Eyeing Its Next Sony Spider-Man Series
Streaming cancellations rarely come as a total surprise anymore, but they can still sting when a show manages to check nearly every box that’s supposed to guarantee a renewal. Strong reviews, awards recognition, and a passionate fanbase have all failed to save series before, and this latest decision proves that pattern holds true even for one of this year’s most acclaimed genre offerings.
Amazon’s ambitious partnership with Sony Pictures Television to build out a live-action universe around Spider-Man’s extended cast of characters has had a rocky start, with one earlier project already scrapped before ever reaching screens. That history made the fate of its first completed series feel like a genuine test case for whether this entire creative venture could actually work.
That test has now delivered a mixed verdict. Prime Video has canceled ‘Spider-Noir,’ the Nicolas Cage-led series based on Sony’s Spider-Man characters, after just one season, despite the show earning an impressive 92 percent critics score and 90 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, along with 11 Emmy nominations, the most of any Prime Video series in 2026. At the same time, Amazon is reportedly close to greenlighting another series based on the same shared universe of characters.
‘Spider-Noir’ followed Cage as Ben Reilly, a private investigator in 1930s New York whose past life as the city’s only masked hero, known as The Spider, catches up with him. The eight-episode season premiered on the linear MGM+ channel on May 25 before streaming on Prime Video the following day, giving viewers the option to watch in either full color or classic black-and-white.
Despite the critical acclaim, the series reportedly struggled to maintain consistent viewership throughout its run. According to Nielsen streaming data, the show generated 2.6 billion viewing minutes in the U.S. during its first six weeks, a respectable figure that ultimately wasn’t strong enough given the production’s reportedly substantial costs.
Sony’s overall Spider-Man television deal with Amazon has faced challenges before this cancellation as well. ‘Silk,’ another planned spinoff series that would have been the first show ordered under the partnership, was scrapped entirely before ever reaching production, making ‘Spider-Noir’ the first title from the deal to actually make it to air.
Despite the setback, Amazon and Sony’s broader collaboration appears far from finished. Deadline reports that the two companies are continuing development on multiple additional projects tied to Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters, with one project reportedly nearing an official series order, though specific details about its concept remain under wraps for now.
That continued investment suggests Amazon views ‘Spider-Noir’s’ cancellation less as a referendum on the overall creative partnership and more as a lesson in balancing production costs against actual viewership numbers. Given the sheer size of Sony’s catalog, which includes more than 900 Spider-Man-related characters, there’s no shortage of potential directions the next series could take.

For now, exactly which character might anchor Amazon’s next Spider-Man-adjacent series remains unclear, leaving plenty of room for fan speculation. Given how differently ‘Spider-Noir’ performed critically compared to its viewership retention, whatever comes next will likely need to strike a more sustainable balance between ambitious production value and consistent audience engagement.
With Amazon seemingly committed to continuing this creative experiment despite one high-profile cancellation, fans of Sony’s extended Spider-Man mythology can expect this shared television universe to keep expanding, even if ‘Spider-Noir’ itself won’t be part of its future.
