Channing Tatum is officially returning as Gambit in Avengers: Doomsday, and he has already teased a major moment for his character.

Speaking to Variety, Tatum revealed that Gambit will be part of a “big fight” with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, hinting at some intense action in the upcoming film.

Tatum first played Gambit in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, and fans responded positively to his portrayal.

Now, he’ll reprise the role alongside X-Men legends including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden. The actor has long had a personal connection to Gambit. He was originally set to star in a solo Gambit movie and even worked on co-directing it with producing partner Reid Carolin, but the project fell apart in 2019 after Disney acquired Fox.

Reflecting on the canceled film, Tatum said, “The universe just saved us. We would have failed so hard.”

Tatum explained what draws him to the character: “He likes women, he smokes, he drinks. He’s not just a save-the-world kind of guy — we need those, but we need contrast.” He also addressed the challenges of bringing Gambit’s accent to the screen, saying, “I’m not gonna go full Cajun.”

Directors Anthony and Joe Russo want the character to be funny at times but also serious when needed. “When Gambit gets serious — when he drops the Mardi Gras mask — things do matter,” Tatum said.

Filming has included long days in London, which Tatum described as both challenging and rewarding. He shared how he balanced the role with family responsibilities, saying, “I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do ‘Avengers,’ because I was going to have to be gone, but I was like — it’s OK. She’s going into middle school now.”

This isn’t the only fight spoiler revealed for Avengers: Doomsday. A few weeks ago, Alan Cumming mentioned that his character would face Pedro Pascal’s Mr. Fantastic. The film is currently scheduled to release in the United States on December 18, 2026.

The release was delayed several times, first from May 2025 to May 2026, partly due to the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike, and then again to allow more production time. Avengers: Doomsday will be part of Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
