‘Star Fox’ Is Finally Back, and Nintendo’s Switch 2 Reveal Trailer Just Set the Lylat System on Fire

Few franchises in Nintendo’s history have spent more time gathering dust than ‘Star Fox’. The beloved space-combat series built its legacy on the back of the Nintendo 64 era, and while its adventures across the Lylat System once captivated millions, the property has been largely absent from gaming conversations for the better part of a decade. After years of fan speculation and months of persistent insider rumors surrounding the franchise’s future, Nintendo has now officially brought it back.

The announcement arrived in characteristically dramatic Nintendo fashion. News about the game dropped in a brand new Star Fox Direct, and while Directs are typically announced ahead of time, this event came completely out of nowhere. The game was revealed after Nintendo dropped a completely unannounced Star Fox Direct reveal on the Nintendo Today app, with the broadcast following about ten minutes later. It was the kind of surprise reveal that the internet lives for, and the gaming community responded accordingly.

The trailer wasted no time establishing the tone, opening on a sweeping cinematic view of Planet Corneria and the wider Lylat System. Simply titled ‘Star Fox’, the game is described as a cinematic take on ‘Star Fox 64’, featuring newly overhauled character designs, freshly revamped looks for each stage, plus detailed cutscenes, fully voiced dialogue and a sweeping orchestral soundtrack. The game expands on the original level design, story, and gameplay mechanics, and introduces new character designs, making it the third remake of ‘Star Fox 64’ following ‘Star Fox 64 3D’ in 2011 and ‘Star Fox Zero’ in 2016.

Beyond the visual overhaul, Nintendo is padding the package with substantial new content. The game features a variety of modes including Campaign Mode, a Challenge Mode where players can replay cleared stages with new objectives, and a Battle Mode that introduces all-new four-versus-four dogfights with up to eight players divided between Team Star Fox and Team Star Wolf, playable both locally and online. The game also takes advantage of Switch 2 hardware, allowing players to swap seamlessly between button and Joy-Con 2 mouse controls in Campaign and Challenge modes.

The timing of the reveal also carries cultural weight beyond the game itself. Following Fox McCloud’s appearance in ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’, rumors had swirled about a new ‘Star Fox’ project finally coming to fans. Nintendo appears to be capitalizing on renewed mainstream interest in the character, using the film’s momentum to reintroduce a generation of players to the Arwing and its crew.

Priced at $49.99 digitally on the Nintendo eShop, the title comes in on the more affordable end for a Switch 2 release. The fifteen-minute Direct showed off a lot of what players can expect, including brand new looks for Fox, Falco, Peppy, and Slippy, designed to make them appear more animalistic, alongside a bigger focus on story with new cutscenes and cinematics. Fan reactions have ranged from pure elation to cautious skepticism over yet another revisit to the ’64 blueprint, but one thing is certain: the Lylat System is back in the conversation.

Whether this cinematic reimagining is the definitive ‘Star Fox’ experience fans have been waiting for, or simply another pit stop on the way to something wholly original, is something only June will settle, so share your thoughts below on whether Nintendo’s latest bet on Fox McCloud has you ready to do a barrel roll back into the series.
