Warner Bros. has officially revealed a new chapter in the Middle-earth cinematic universe, tentatively titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past. The announcement came as a surprise on March 25, during a joint video appearance by original trilogy director Peter Jackson and television host Stephen Colbert.

The project is specifically designed to bring to life several significant chapters from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring that were famously omitted from the 2001 film adaptation. Colbert, a renowned Tolkien scholar, revealed that he spearheaded the idea alongside his son, screenwriter Peter McGee.

The narrative will center on the early journey of the hobbits, specifically focusing on the stretch of the book from Three is Company to the eerie events of Fog on the Barrow-downs.

Colbert expressed his desire to create a film that honors the source material with absolute precision while maintaining the visual and emotional tone established by Jackson’s original trilogy.

“Could we make something that was completely faithful to the books while also being completely faithful to the movies that you guys had already made?” Colbert asked during the reveal.

The film’s plot is set fourteen years after Frodo Baggins’ departure from the Shire, serving as a nostalgic look back at the beginning of the great quest. Sam, Merry, and Pippin will reportedly reunite to retrace the initial steps of their journey, providing a framing device for the “lost” adventures of the past.

A major subplot will follow Sam’s daughter, Elanor, as she uncovers a buried secret that suggests the War of the Ring was nearly lost in its earliest days. A highlight for many fans is the long-awaited cinematic debut of Tom Bombadil, a whimsical and powerful character who was cut from the 2001 movie.

The story will see Frodo and his companions becoming trapped in a heavy mist on the Barrow-downs before being captured by malevolent spirits known as Barrow-wights. Jackson confirmed that his long-time creative partner Philippa Boyens has joined the writing team to ensure the new script aligns perfectly with the franchise’s history.

While Shadows of the Past is still in the early stages of development, another Middle-earth film is already well on its way. The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, directed by and starring Andy Serkis, is currently slated for a theatrical release on December 17, 2027.

Jackson provided an optimistic update on that production, stating that the creative team is making excellent progress. “The script is coming together really well, and I think it’s going to be a really good film,” he noted during the presentation.

The 2027 film is expected to feature several returning stars, with Sir Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood both hinting at their involvement as Gandalf and Frodo. McKellen recently teased that the script includes both of their characters, suggesting a “getting the band back together” atmosphere behind the scenes.

Production for The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled to begin in New Zealand in May, utilizing advanced digital techniques to help the original actors reprise their roles despite the decades that have passed.

Stephen Colbert’s transition from late-night television to the world of blockbuster screenwriting marks a major milestone for the host, who is set to wrap up his tenure on The Late Show soon.

His deep personal connection to Tolkien’s work has been a staple of his career, frequently leading to segments where he out-knowledges even the film’s cast members. This collaboration represents a rare instance of a superfan successfully moving from the audience to the writers’ room of their favorite franchise.
