It’s shaping up to be a big fall for Stephen King fans. Mike Flanagan’s ‘Carrie’ series arrives on Prime Video on October 7, and ‘The Institute’, MGM+’s thriller adapted from King’s 2019 novel of the same name, is gearing up for its second season just a month later.

The series has come a long way in a short time. It premiered on July 13, 2025, with 8 episodes written and showrun by Benjamin Cavell, and earned a second-season renewal just weeks later after becoming a hit for the network.

Now fans have their first extended look at what comes next. MGM+ has released the official trailer for ‘The Institute’ season 2, confirming the show returns on November 8 and introducing a powerful new antagonist.

The nearly 2-minute trailer leans into a sense of dread, flashing the words “Welcome Back” over footage of the Institute’s eerie facilities. It follows Luke Ellis, played by Joe Freeman, and the other kids with psychic powers who were kidnapped by the shadowy organization, which experiments on them under the guise of saving the world.

According to MGM+’s official synopsis, Luke and his friends are searching for a way to end the Institute for good after their climactic escape from Dennison. Meanwhile, the Director recruits a new ally to help him rebuild, and Ms. Sigsby’s life as a fugitive pushes her to seek a way back in.

Bloody Disgusting noted that this time, the gifted kids on the run may finally be ready to fight back. Luke and Ben Barnes’ Tim Jamieson appear determined to fight for every child who has been taken or lost their family.

The trailer also offers the first real footage of new cast member Alfie Allen. The ‘Game of Thrones’ alum plays Nolan Reeves, described as an eccentric European tech billionaire and one of the Institute’s financial backers with an ambitious agenda all his own.

Reeves is an entirely new character created for the show. He is the tech billionaire the Director turns to in hopes of rebuilding the Institute, and the trailer suggests he will directly interfere with Luke and Tim’s mission.

That new villain is just one way the series is heading into uncharted territory. Season 1 already covered the entirety of King’s novel, so season 2 continues the story without source material to follow.

It also retcons a major part of the book. In King’s novel, Mary-Louise Parker’s Ms. Sigsby dies, but the series kept her alive in the season 1 finale, and the new trailer shows her on the run. Returning cast members include Simone Miller as Kalisha, Fionn Laird as Nicky, Arlen So as George, Robert Joy as Dr. Hendricks, and Hannah Galway as Wendy.

King himself has been enthusiastic about the continuation. When the series was renewed, the author said new dangers await the escapees, adding that he couldn’t wait to see what comes next.

Season 1 earned a positive reception, with a 64% critics score and 70% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Not every reviewer was sold, though, as Dread Central’s critic felt the first season fizzled out with a finale that played it too safe.

Jack Bender returns as director and executive producer alongside Cavell, with King also serving as an executive producer. After the November 8 premiere, new episodes are expected to roll out weekly.

The series streams exclusively on MGM+ in the US, UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and Colombia. Amazon MGM Studios Distribution will handle all other international territories.
