Steve Carell is well-known for his legendary comedic timing, but he often emphasizes that his most important job is fatherhood. In a recent interview with L’Officiel, the 63-year-old actor discussed how his personal life with his two children, Annie and John, significantly influenced his performance in the new HBO series, Rooster.

He explained that he frequently channeled his actual bond with his daughter into his character’s own emotional arc during filming. The actor even facilitated a professional opportunity for his daughter by helping her secure a production assistant position on the set.

This led to a memorable moment where his real-life feelings briefly merged with his script. “I actually got her a job working as a production assistant on the show, and when we were shooting one scene, I accidentally said, ‘I would do anything for Annie,’ instead of saying my character’s daughter’s name,” he revealed.

The mistake resonated with the crew and perfectly captured the genuine sentiment he intended to bring to the scene. “There was this big ‘aww’ sort of moment, but it really lined up for me,” he recalled. “Because I was thinking of my daughter as I said the line.”

For Carell, who shares his two children with his wife, Nancy Walls, the joy of parenting far outweighs any professional milestone. “Raising children is my favorite part of my life,” he noted. “There’s not even a close second—it’s the most satisfying thing I’ve done.”

Despite his immense fame, the comedian has always made a conscious effort to keep his work life separate from his home life. He views his acting career as a professional endeavor rather than his entire identity, largely to ensure his children have a grounded upbringing.

“It’s always just been a job,” he explained. “I’ve tried not to let it define me too much. But mostly, I just didn’t want it to be weird for my kids.” He has successfully shielded them from the spotlight for most of their lives, only bringing them to occasional red-carpet events.

A rare public appearance occurred in 2022 during the premiere of Minions: The Rise of Gru, a film in which he voices the lead character. “They’re here today,” he said at the time. “These movies started when they were 4 and 7, and now they’re 18 and 21.”

He noted that even as young adults, his children remain deeply connected to the franchise because of their shared history. “I put it out to them like, ‘Well, the premiere is this week, do you want to go?’ And they were all over it, like not even a hesitation,” he said.

“I think it’s nostalgic at this point. They love the characters, and they love the franchise. It’s been a big part of our family.” Outside of his role in Rooster, Carell has remained incredibly active in the industry throughout the year.

He is executive producing a new animated series for Netflix that is expected to be announced later this year. The actor’s career continues to evolve as he transitions between serious dramatic roles and his classic comedic roots.

Fans can expect to see much more of him as he continues to balance these complex roles with his dedication to his family. His ability to remain authentic while portraying a wide variety of characters remains one of the primary reasons he is so beloved by audiences worldwide.
