Steve Gonsalves, known for his work on Ghost Hunters, recently opened up about the scariest paranormal experience he has ever had.

In an interview with E! News, he named Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Louisville, Kentucky, as the place that left the biggest impression on him.

“It’s going to be a place called Waverly Hills in Louisville, Ky., and it was a tuberculosis hospital, very sad but over 60,000 people died there in just a three-year period,” Steve said. He described the energy in the building as overwhelming, with apparitions, doors slamming, objects moving, and voices that seem to appear out of nowhere. “The frequency of activity there is incredibly high and it’s always right in front of you… it happens as soon as you walk in.”

Waverly Hills originally opened in the early 1900s during a tuberculosis outbreak. The five-story facility treated hundreds of patients before closing in 1961, after antibiotics made TB sanatoriums largely unnecessary.

Over the years, the building gained a reputation for strange occurrences, turning it into one of the country’s most well-known haunted locations. Today, it operates as a tourist destination offering historical tours, paranormal investigations, and special events.

Steve explained that visiting Waverly Hills had a deep emotional impact on him. “I cried. I wanted to go there for so long and it’s so beautiful and it’s gorgeous. You come up this creepy drive with all the trees shrouding it and, when you see it just reveal itself, I started getting emotional. It’s just absolutely beautiful.”

He also noted how the tragic history of the hospital made the experience even more moving. “The sadness that happened there and the grief… you get a little emotional. I thought it was fantastic.”

For those who prefer their thrills from the comfort of home, Steve recommended watching John Carpenter’s classic horror film, The Thing. “That, for me, is required viewing not just at Halloween but all year around.”

It’s clear that even seasoned ghost hunters like Steve can be deeply affected by locations with such a haunting history. Waverly Hills remains a bucket-list destination for anyone interested in paranormal activity or American history.
