Streamer Jack Doherty Could Spend 7 Years in Jail if Convicted on All Charges
Miami streamer Jack Doherty is facing serious legal trouble after being arrested over the weekend while making content, according to police reports. During a search, officers say they found “half of an orange oval shaped pill with a 3 on it,” which they noted was “consistent with” an amphetamine. They also discovered three hand-rolled “suspected cannabis cigarettes,” the arrest affidavit states.
Doherty was charged with three counts: possession of a controlled substance, possession of 20 grams or less of marijuana, and resisting an officer without violence.
The first charge is classified as a third-degree felony, which can carry a prison term of up to five years. The other two are first-degree misdemeanors, each carrying up to a year in jail under Florida law. If Doherty were to be convicted on all counts and receive the maximum sentences, he could face up to seven years behind bars.
Authorities said Doherty had shown a “nonchalant” attitude during the encounter, which contributed to the resisting charge. Despite the arrest, Doherty has continued streaming online since the incident.
Data from Measures for Justice shows that in Miami-Dade County, fewer than 8.5 percent of people convicted of nonviolent felonies with no prior convictions were sentenced to prison, even though over 58 percent were convicted. The median sentence in similar cases was 24 months, suggesting Doherty might face a shorter term if convicted.
This situation raises questions about the consequences of minor drug possession and resisting charges. Doherty’s fans may be surprised to learn that legal trouble could loom even for nonviolent incidents.
