‘Street Fighter’ Star Callina Liang Shuts Down Doubters With Blunt Behind-The-Scenes Message
Live-action video game adaptations have a rocky history when it comes to satisfying die-hard fans, and few franchises come with higher expectations than ‘Street Fighter.’ Every casting choice, costume reveal, and set photo gets picked apart by a fanbase that’s watched decades of attempts try and fail to capture the series’ larger-than-life characters.
That scrutiny has followed Callina Liang closely since she was announced as the actress bringing Chun-Li to life in Legendary’s upcoming reboot. Between her physical transformation and the character’s iconic proportions, fans have had plenty to speculate about in the months leading up to the film’s release.
Some of that speculation recently crossed into accusations of digital manipulation, prompting Liang to address the rumors directly. In a series of Instagram Stories and posts, the actress shared behind-the-scenes footage of herself in full Chun-Li costume, captioning the clip with a blunt message: “I don’t have time to photoshop ok.”
The clip shows Liang posing near her vanity trailer on set, dressed in Chun-Li’s signature blue costume, complete with spiked wrist cuffs and the character’s iconic hair buns. It was a direct response to online chatter questioning whether her visibly muscular legs had been digitally enhanced rather than earned through actual physical preparation.
According to Liang, the transformation was very real, and very demanding. Speaking to Empire magazine ahead of the film’s release, she detailed a grueling regimen built specifically around replicating Chun-Li’s fighting style. “Chun-Li is all kicks. So we did a bunch of Taekwondo training, Muay Thai, and Wushu,” she told Empire, describing two hours of daily training alongside significant dietary changes.

Liang didn’t shy away from describing just how intense that process became at its peak. She explained that her training regimen was paired with a high-calorie eating schedule designed to support rapid muscle growth in her legs specifically, a period she described as physically exhausting given how frequently she had to eat throughout the day.

By the end of production, Liang said her thighs had grown by roughly six and a half centimeters each, a transformation she credits entirely to the training and nutrition plan rather than any post-production alteration. Co-star Noah Centineo, who plays Ken Masters, has also spoken about the shared preparation process, noting that he, Liang, and Andrew Koji, who portrays Ryu, trained together six days a week for six weeks ahead of filming.
Liang’s commitment reflects a broader approach the production has taken toward physical authenticity across its ensemble cast. Directed by Kitao Sakurai, the film brings together an unusually stacked roster of fighters and personalities, including Jason Momoa, David Dastmalchian, Roman Reigns, and 50 Cent, alongside Koji and Centineo.

In the film, Liang’s Chun-Li recruits Ryu and Ken to join a martial arts tournament while confronting the villainous M. Bison, played by Dastmalchian. With so many recognizable fighters from the games represented on screen, the production has leaned heavily into getting the details right, right down to each actor’s physical presence.
‘Street Fighter’ is set to hit theaters on October 16, and if the reaction to Liang’s latest behind-the-scenes photos is any indication, anticipation for the film continues building steadily. Between the cast’s visible dedication and the franchise’s long-awaited big-screen return, expectations remain high heading into release.
