Few members of the new ‘Street Fighter’ ensemble have a backstory quite as remarkable as Rayna Vallandingham, the real-life champion bringing Juli to the big screen. The American martial artist began practicing taekwondo at just 2 years old and became a taekwondo world champion by age 8, eventually racking up 13 world titles.

That foundation made her a natural fit for Kitao Sakurai’s video game adaptation, which arrived in theaters on October 16. She was first revealed as part of the cast at The Game Awards on December 11, 2025, joining a lineup the marketing has proudly built around actual fighters.

Now, a fresh set of press photos shared by fans on X has fans praising the actress all over again. The images show Vallandingham in an edgy all-black ensemble, pairing a structured military-style jacket with ornate braided detailing and a black leather top, her dark hair swept into a loose high bun.

It’s a sleek, confident look that echoes the film’s gritty arcade-inspired aesthetic. The outfit also feels like a stylish nod to the tough, disciplined fighter she plays on screen. This isn’t her first standout press moment, either. Earlier this month, she posed alongside co-star Callina Liang in a gray leather corset-style top with matching pants, throwing a fist toward the camera in a playful nod to her character.

In the film, Vallandingham plays Juli, a character who first appeared in ‘Street Fighter Alpha 3’. Juli is an assassin tied to M. Bison’s brainwashed Dolls, and the adaptation stays true to the character’s role and abilities from the games.

The part demands agile, acrobatic fighting, making her casting feel especially authentic. As Lowkick MMA noted, the role requires genuine martial arts capability rather than choreography learned on set.

Her co-stars bring plenty of muscle too. The ensemble includes Callina Liang as Chun-Li, Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken, Cody Rhodes as Guile, and Orville Peck as Vega.

Vallandingham’s road to Hollywood wasn’t overnight. She made her film debut at age 10 in ‘Underdog Kids’ and then spent 12 years auditioning before landing her big break. That breakthrough came with ‘Cobra Kai’, where she debuted as Zara Malik in Season 6, Part 2 in 2024. ‘Street Fighter’ marks only the second major role of her acting career and her first big franchise blockbuster.

She has also built a massive online following, with more than 3.7 million Instagram followers who regularly tune in for her stunt videos featuring staffs and nunchucks. The role carries personal meaning for the actress. Speaking to The National, Vallandingham, whose mother is of Indian origin and whose father is of Dutch descent, explained that she hopes to be the kind of role model she struggled to find growing up.

She described action-heavy parts like Juli as rare for South Asian actresses. Her hope is that young girls watching her feel their ambitions are possible. The film itself has had a mixed reception.

‘Street Fighter’ opened to $31 million domestically and $51.1 million worldwide, though critics have been far less enthusiastic than audiences, with a 41% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes against a 79% audience score. Whatever its final box office tally, the movie has given Vallandingham a major platform. Fans are already wondering what the 13-time world champion will take on next.

Did Rayna Vallandingham’s real-life martial arts skills make her stand out in Street Fighter?
