‘Superman’ Follow-Up: James Gunn Drops Fresh Details
James Gunn isn’t slowing down when it comes to building out the new DC Universe. After the success of his 2025 Superman movie, Gunn has now confirmed that a sequel is already in development. The filmmaker, who both wrote and directed the first movie, recently shared some early details about what fans can expect next for the Man of Steel.
The first film was a big deal for DC since it served as a complete reset for Superman on the big screen. David Corenswet stepped into the role of Clark Kent, joined by Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
The story showed Superman caught in the middle of an international crisis engineered by Luthor. While he managed to stop the disaster, the fallout left him struggling to regain the trust of the world. That story, along with strong performances and Gunn’s fresh direction, made the movie both a critical and box office hit.
Because of that success, Gunn made it clear very quickly that there would be a follow-up. What’s interesting is that he isn’t planning to simply continue the same story. Instead, he’s already hinting at something bigger. Speaking with Deadline (via The Playlist), Gunn explained that the sequel won’t just be another solo Superman adventure. “It’s within the group of characters we’ve already met, and Superman’s an important element of it. So, that’s what I’ll say, but like that movie, that treatment is done.”
This lines up with what Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said earlier when he described the next film as part of a larger “Super-Family” franchise. That suggests the sequel could bring in other heroes connected to Superman. Since Gunn already has projects like the upcoming Supergirl movie on the way, it’s easy to imagine that Kara Zor-El might play a major role in the story.
Gunn also hinted that the movie has already reached the treatment stage, which means the outline is finished and the story direction is clear. While he didn’t reveal who else might be involved, the idea of a team-up has already sparked fan speculation. Characters introduced in the first film, such as members of the Daily Planet or other DC heroes teased in the new universe, could easily be part of the action.
This aligns with some comments made by Gunn on social media, as the director recently confirmed he is currently writing that sequel.

For now, fans will have to wait for more official announcements. But between the Supergirl solo movie scheduled for release next year and the confirmed Superman sequel after that, it’s obvious that Gunn is putting a lot of focus on making Superman the core of this new universe.
