Surprising Box Office Figures Reveal Why Sony Insists on SSU: “Now you know why Sony doesn’t wanna give up Spider-Man”

Making superhero movies is enjoyable, but the real focus is always on the financial returns. With the recent release of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ the MCU is poised to continue its success as a highly profitable franchise. The latest installment is projected to earn over $1 billion, helping the MCU surpass $30 billion in total earnings.

Recent figures shared on X by Culture Crave highlight the top 18 highest-grossing movie franchises of all time.

While many names on this list may be expected, it might surprise you to learn that Spider-Man movies have out-earned the DC, the Star Wars franchise, and the Wizarding World. Spider-Man films have amassed approximately $10.61 billion to date, with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man contributing significantly to both the MCU and Sony’s universe due to their joint production.

Among Spider-Man films, Tom Holland’s movies and Sam Raimi’s trilogy are the most profitable, with Marc Webb’s films trailing behind.

The Raimi Spider-Man trilogy set opening day records in North America and ranks among the top Marvel Comics films. ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ holds the highest position at 2nd, with ‘Spider-Man’ at 10th and ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ at 11th in North America. Globally, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ is 3rd, followed closely by ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home,’ ‘Spider-Man 3,’ and ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming.’ Both the Raimi trilogy and the MCU Spider-Man films (‘Homecoming,’ ‘Far From Home,’ and ‘No Way Home’) are some of Sony/Columbia Pictures’ top-grossing films in North America, with ‘No Way Home’ being Sony’s highest-grossing film worldwide.

Fans have pointed out that these impressive earnings likely explain why Sony remains committed to Spider-Man and continues to push its own cinematic universe, the SSU. Despite the SSU’s mixed track record—boasting one critically acclaimed success but also featuring the poorly received ‘Morbius’ and ‘Madame Web’—Sony’s commitment is clear, and now you understand why.

The fourth MCU ‘Spider-Man’ movie is currently in active development, and it’s expected to break records once again.
