Sydney Sweeney is standing her ground after facing backlash over her American Eagle jeans campaign. In a recent interview with GQ’s Katherine Stoeffel, the actress refused to apologize despite repeated attempts to get her to respond to criticism.

The July campaign, titled “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,” sparked controversy online because some social media users claimed the pun between “jeans” and “genes,” featuring a blonde-haired, blue-eyed white woman, promoted ideas tied to eugenics and white supremacy.

During the GQ interview, Stoeffel asked about the reaction, saying, “I mean, Trump tweeted about the jeans ad … that just seems like a very crazy moment…” Sweeney described it as, “surreal.”

Stoeffel also asked if Sweeney worried that people might make assumptions about her personal beliefs. “The risk is that there’s a chance that somebody will get some idea about what you think about certain issues … Do you worry about that?” she asked. Sweeney replied firmly, “No. I think that when I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear.”

The interviewer specifically raised the criticism that some believed white people shouldn’t joke about genetic superiority. Sweeney responded, “I think that when I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear.”

The campaign also caught the attention of prominent figures, including White House communications director Steven Cheung, Vice President JD Vance, and President Donald Trump. Asked about the campaign, Trump said, “She’s a registered Republican? Oh, now I love her ad! You’d be surprised at how many people are Republicans … If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic!”

Despite the controversy, Sweeney has refused to apologize, insisting that she will speak about issues on her own terms.
