Sci-fi comedy series Resident Alien has been canceled after four seasons. The announcement came on a Thursday night, just before the show’s finale, which was scheduled to air on August 8.

The series stars Alan Tudyk as Harry, an alien who crash-lands on Earth and tries to fit in with humans in a small Colorado town.

Resident Alien started on Syfy but moved to the USA Network for its fourth season in an attempt to reach more viewers.

The show also gained new fans when the first three seasons became available on Netflix last summer, giving it a boost in viewership. In an interview with TV Insider, Chris Sheridan, the show’s creator and showrunner, said he “knew going into [season four] that this was likely going to be our final season.”

He added, “Creatively, that was exciting because I knew we could spend the time wrapping up some storylines and driving toward an ending. I’m so proud of how good Season 4 is and especially proud that we were able to finish as strongly as we did, with a finale that is probably my favorite episode of the series.”

The story follows Harry Vanderspeigle, the alien played by Tudyk, who takes over the identity of a vacationing doctor after crashing in the town of Patience, Colorado. Harry was sent to Earth with a mission to destroy humanity but starts to question his orders as he slowly learns what it means to be human.

While pretending to be a medical examiner, he often struggles with human emotions, social cues, and awkward situations. Over time, Harry develops feelings for the people around him and ends up protecting the town from other alien threats.

Besides Tudyk, the show features Sara Tomko as Asta Twelvetrees, the assistant at the local clinic and a member of the Ute Native American tribe. Corey Reynolds plays Sheriff Mike Thompson, who carries the weight of his past police work in Washington, D.C. Alice Wetterlund stars as D’arcy Bloom, a local pub owner and mountaineer who is best friends with Asta.

Levi Fiehler portrays Ben Hawthorne, the charming but often overshadowed mayor of Patience, while Judah Prehn plays Max Hawthorne, Ben’s son who is the only one able to see Harry’s alien form. Elizabeth Bowen appears as Deputy Olivia Baker, who works alongside Sheriff Mike, and Meredith Garretson plays Kate Hawthorne, Ben’s wife and Max’s mother.

The series was produced by UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, alongside Amblin TV and Dark Horse Entertainment. Both Syfy and USA Network are part of Comcast’s new cable TV company called Versant.

Resident Alien combines comedy, drama, and sci-fi elements, creating a unique story about an alien struggling to understand humanity while living undercover. The show gained praise for its humor, story, and strong performances, especially by Alan Tudyk.

This cancellation news comes as a disappointment to many fans, but the creators had prepared for this ending, aiming to give the series a proper conclusion with season four.
