Gladiator (Franchise)

“Gladiator” is a 2000 epic historical drama film directed by Ridley Scott and written by David Franzoni, John Logan, and William Nicholson. Starring Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, and Connie Nielsen among others, the film follows Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius, who seeks revenge after being betrayed by Commodus, the ambitious son of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Reduced to slavery, Maximus rises as a gladiator, aiming to avenge his family and the murdered emperor. The screenplay was inspired by the novel “Those About to Die” and underwent several rewrites during production, which was marked by challenges including the death of actor Oliver Reed. A sequel to the movie ‘Gladiator II’ is currently being filmed set for 2024 release.
