Taron Egerton recently joined Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, where they talked about many things, including the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Horowitz brought up how director Joe Russo once said that Egerton would be perfect for the role of Wolverine.

Egerton responded by saying, “Joe is very sweet, Joe and I are friends though. You know he’s not being impartial there.”

When asked if he ever followed up on that idea, Egerton made it clear that playing Wolverine isn’t his goal. “No, I do talk to Joe from time to time but I don’t think about that. Jackman is Wolverine you know. Hugh Jackman is Wolverine,” he said. Egerton explained that people often ask him about it, and although he tries to be polite, it feels like he’s the one pushing the idea.

He admitted that when the rumors first started, he thought “that would be cool,” but it never went beyond that. He also noted that the character hasn’t appeared in the new MCU stories yet and, of course, Hugh Jackman returned to the role.

Egerton added that Hugh Jackman is so closely linked to Wolverine that it would be hard for anyone else to fill those shoes. He also mentioned that he isn’t interested in the kind of intense attention that comes with such a famous role, which makes sense. Casting talks for big MCU roles often get messy and can create a lot of drama quickly.

During the podcast, Horowitz also asked about a past meeting Egerton had with Marvel boss Kevin Feige. Egerton finally revealed they talked about a different character but couldn’t remember exactly who. “Honestly can’t remember Josh. I honestly can’t remember, it might have been Cyclops? Maybe. I don’t know. There was a conversation around that years ago back when it was Fox thing. There was a Cyclops conversation years ago.”

From this, it seems unlikely Egerton will be joining the MCU anytime soon. It’s not because he isn’t interested, but rather because he prefers to keep a lower profile. Still, if he ever changes his mind about playing Wolverine or Cyclops, there will probably be chances in the future.

Back in July 2019, at San Diego Comic-Con, Kevin Feige said mutants, including the X-Men, will come to the MCU. He explained that the MCU’s version of these characters will be different from the ones seen in the older Fox movies.

By September 2023, Marvel Studios was already working on an X-Men film, and Michael Lesslie started writing the script in 2024. Jake Schreier was later announced as the director after the success of Thunderbolts* (2025). Feige said the film will have a new, younger cast and take place after the MCU “reset” in the Secret Wars storyline.

The news and comments shared during Egerton’s podcast offer an interesting glimpse into his thoughts on Marvel roles and the future of mutants in the MCU.
