Tatiana Maslany Reveals Her Unusual Answer to a Captain America vs. Iron Man Question

Marvel actors field the same handful of predictable questions constantly, whether it’s ranking their favorite fight scenes or naming which villain they’d want to face off against in real life. Every so often, though, an interview manages to produce an answer that sidesteps the expected script entirely.

Tatiana Maslany, who has spent years now inhabiting Jennifer Walters in “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,” recently found herself fielding exactly that kind of hypothetical during a wide-ranging conversation. Rather than picking one of the franchise’s two most iconic leaders, her response leaned into something considerably more playful and revealing about her sense of humor.

When asked whether she views the world through the eyes of Captain America or Iron Man, Maslany told Zeteo, “I’m going to be like neither, please. I always pick little Groot.” The exchange took place during an episode of Zeteo’s “We’re Not Kidding,” a conversation that covered considerably more ground than just superhero trivia.

Maslany used the platform to speak candidly about a range of topics, including her views on AI adoption within Hollywood, which she bluntly characterized as “idiotic.” That directness fits a pattern for Maslany, who has previously been outspoken about industry issues, including her past public criticism of Disney CEO Bob Iger during the SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Her Groot preference also lines up with a broader tendency she’s shown when discussing her favorite parts of the Marvel universe, often gravitating toward the franchise’s more offbeat or emotionally grounded characters rather than its flagship heroes. Choosing a sapling version of one of the MCU’s most beloved supporting characters over two of its most consequential figures says as much about her comedic instincts as it does about which corner of the franchise genuinely resonates with her.

Maslany’s own path into the Marvel Cinematic Universe wasn’t entirely smooth sailing at first. Years before landing the role of Jennifer Walters, she publicly denied rumors that she had signed on for “She-Hulk,” calling the swirling reports “funny to even acknowledge” because there was “actually [nothing]” to them at the time. She eventually did take on the role, transforming from the character’s neurotic Los Angeles lawyer persona into her six-foot-seven green alter-ego for the 2022 Disney+ series.

That transformation followed her Emmy-winning run on “Orphan Black,” where she famously played over a dozen distinct clone characters across the show’s run, further establishing her reputation as one of television’s most chameleon-like performers heading into her Marvel debut.

Since her time as She-Hulk, Maslany has continued building a varied filmography, including roles in Osgood Perkins’ horror films “The Monkey” and the upcoming “Keeper,” alongside other projects across film and television. That range makes her lighthearted Groot answer feel consistent with an actor who has never shied away from unconventional choices, whether in her career or in a casual interview aside.
