Thanos and Doctor Doom Might Have Something Surprising in Common in the MCU According to Latest Rumors
Thanos is one of the most memorable villains in movie history, mostly because of his role in the MCU. Fans loved to meme him, but many also debated whether his plan to solve overpopulation and resource problems in the universe was actually “right” or “wrong.”
For a long time, it seemed impossible to replace Thanos as a major villain. When Kang the Conqueror appeared, audiences didn’t respond as strongly, something even Kevin Feige admitted, saying that plans to replace Kang as a villain were in motion well before any controversy around Jonathan Majors arose.
Now, the MCU might have found the perfect replacement: Doctor Doom. This character is incredibly popular in the comics, arguably even more than Thanos, and fans are excited to see what the MCU does with him.
While we don’t yet know Doom’s full agenda in the films, it’s likely that, like in the Secret Wars storyline, the MCU will give him a strong reason for his actions, instead of just making him a “bad guy.”
Industry insider Alex Perez recently shared some details about Avengers: Doomsday, hinting at Doom’s role in the story. When asked about the importance of different characters, Perez said, “The heroes who have been the faces of Phases 4, 5 and 6, (primarily in the movies) will be the ones who have a bigger focus in Doomsday but would (or at least try to) have equal screentime and appearances.” He explained that the scripts are still being written without a fixed runtime, so the filmmakers are letting the story dictate character appearances.
What Perez did confirm, though, is very important for fans. He said, “The main character, or ‘hero’ for Avengers: Doomsday, will be Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, in the same way Josh Brolin’s Thanos was the main character of Avengers: Infinity War.” This suggests that Doom won’t just be another villain in the background; he’ll be central to the story.
This is a smart move, especially considering that Doom barely appeared in Fantastic Four: First Steps. Fans didn’t get a real sense of his power or threat level, and this gives the MCU a chance to properly build him up.
Using Doom as the main villain also mirrors what worked with Thanos: a fully realized character with motivations and screen presence that drive the story.
If these rumors hold true, we could be looking at a major shift in how the MCU handles its villains. Doom might finally take the spot Thanos held, becoming the centerpiece of one of the franchise’s most ambitious stories yet.
