‘That ’90s Show’ Season 1 Ending Explained: What Happens at the End of Leia’s Summer Vacation?

Welcome to the Recap & Ending Explained for Netflix‘s That ’90s Show, a sequel to the famous That ’70s Show. The series sets itself 15 years after the events of That ’70s Show and introduces the character of Leia as its protagonist. Leia is the daughter of both Eric and Donna from the previous show and is now spending time with her grandparents, Kitty and Red, for the summer. The series also reintroduces many characters from the old show, and it even has the old cast as special guests. It is truly nice to see characters like Kelso, Jackie, and Fez back in the fold.

However, the absence of Hyde among the returning characters is noticeable, and his replacement in the new cast of characters just doesn’t hit the mark. The new cast is composed of many young actors, but it is Callie Haverda as Leia, and Ashley Aufderheide as Gwen who standout as the best in that cast. Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp as Red and Kitty Foreman also make a comeback in more of a main role than the rest of the old cast. Their presence is truly welcome, as they also were a highlight in the previous series.

Why Is Leia Staying With Her Grandparents At Point Place?

The series starts with the introduction of Kitty and Red. The old couple is just as charming as ever, but there is one problem: Kitty feels alone. She misses the time when the house was full of kids running around. Red doesn’t think the same; he loves the peace that he is living in. Eric and Donna arrive, and we are introduced to their daughter, Leia. The fifteen-year-old is here on a visit, and Eric is planning to spend the summer with her at space camp. However, Leia is not interested at all.

While exploring the area, Leia meets Gwen, Red, and Kitty’s new neighbor, and they hit it off very well. They establish a relationship very quickly, and Gwen introduces Leia to the rest of the gang, which includes; Nate, Jay, Ozzie, and Nikki. They go on a mission to get a tap for a kettle of beer they found, and Leia comes to the rescue using her debate abilities. It becomes clear that Jay is interested in Leia, and they start flirting with each other. For the first time, Leia feels like she has met a group of people with whom she can be herself.

Right there, and to the disappointment of Eric, Leia decides that she wants to stay at Point Place and spend the summer there with her grandparents and her new friends. Kitty is excited, this is exactly what she wanted. Red, on the other hand, is not so sure. In the end, they end up introducing the old basement to Leia and her friends, and they give their permission, so they can spend all the time they want in there. As the show continues, Leia and Gwen’s relationship becomes tighter than ever, and she also starts dating Jay, who is revealed to be a Kelso, and the son of Michael and Jackie.

What Happens At The End Of Leia’s Summer Vacation?

As the season comes to an end, we get reintroduced to Fez, who is now a famous hairstylist and also starts dating Gwen’s mother. Leia, on the other hand, is ready to go back to her home in Chicago. The gang organizes a goodbye party for Leia, and they have fun, but then Nate lets slip that Jay was planning to break up with Leia now that she is leaving. Leia gets destroyed as Jay is her first boyfriend, and now her first breakup as well. Jay argues that long-distance relationships are hard and that it is the best for them. The rest of the gang agrees, and Leia leaves angry.

Kitty, who is hopeful that Leia might want to come back next summer now that she has a boyfriend and friends here also gets her heart broken when Leia says she doesn’t want to come back to Point Place ever again. Donna arrives and talks to her daughter, and explains to her that she had many breakups with Eric and yet, they managed to stay together in the end. However, Donna explains that the only way to fix her heart is to be with her friend, so she should talk to Gwen before leaving.

Leia goes to Gwen’s place, and she finds Nate there. Nate explains that he supported Jay because he is his best friend, but that in reality, he thinks just like Leia. As they keep talking, Leia and Nate realize that they are meant to be together, and they almost kiss, but Gwen interrupts them. They talk, and Gwen is proud of Leia, who was so naive at first and now is an agent of chaos. They promise to be friends forever. After a talk with Kitty, Jay promises he will try to be a better boyfriend now.

Leia, says that he is very sweet, but she cannot give him an answer because she is very confused right now. She says goodbye, and the season ends as she checks the photos Nikki took with her camera during the entire summer.
